GV Women's Wrestling Earns a 3rd Place Finish at the NWCA National Dual Championships

Selena Mares Becomes a Hero in Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Grand View women's wrestling traveled to the UNI Dome for the NWCA NAIA National Dual tournament. The Vikings entered the duals as the No. 3 seed in the bracket.

FRIDAY

Grand View won their first two duals on Friday, to push themselves into the Semifinal bout. The Vikings took down the University of the Cumberlands in a 27-20 dual, to start the day. GV had bonus point wins from Isabelle Apple and Tristan Nitta to start the dual 9-0. The Vikings dropped a match at 117 before earning another pin from Maya Davis. GV lost three straight after that, including two decisions. Nicole Olson stopped that momentum with a fall in the second period. Going into the final bout at 207, the Vikings were up 22-20 and needed a win to seal the deal. Selena Mares did just that. Mares delivered a head lock after giving up the first takedown and found the fall. GV advanced to the quarterfinal with a 27-20 win.

The second-round matchup was against Indiana Tech, who ranked 7th in the NAIA. Another matchup that came down to the final bout. The Vikings dropped the first match before Eliana Martinez got a 10-3 win at 110 pounds, followed by a Mayangelie Colon fall in the first period. Jasmine Serrano fought for a 12-4 decision at 131 pounds before Indiana Tech found momentum on three straight wins. The Vikings were now down 23-14 with two matches to go. Andjela Prijovic earned a quick pin to give GV some hope, tacking on 5 team points. Then Mares came up clutch once again. Mares delivered another headlock and stuck the finish in just 38 seconds. The Vikings persevered and moved on with a 24-23 victory.

SATURDAY

The Vikings met their match in the semifinal matchup. The Vikings faced No. 2 seed Providence (Mont.) and saw the momentum turn to them early. The Vikings dropped 7 or the first 8 matches, but not without a fight. Colon earned an 11-1 TF staying poised in the midst of a Providence run. The Vikings Prijovic and Mares finished the dual with two falls once again, leaving the final score at 16-27. The Vikings dropped to the 3rd place match.

Grand View met a common opponent in the 3rd place match. The Vikings had a Heart of America conference matchup in William Penn. The Vikings had a chance to get back their early season loss to Penn and did just that. Apple started with a gritty 10-6 victory, followed by a gutsy 2-1 win by Nitta. The Vikings lost the next four matches, but not without a fight. Three of those matches were decisions, and they all earned 1 team point that proved to be crucial. Madison Diaz earned a 6-2 win after a couple of early takedowns, and Senlycki fell at 160, but earned a team point as well. Grand View was down 6 points before the final two matches, and a similar story unfolded for the Vikings. Privovic found a tech fall as time expired in her match and earned 4 team points. That left Selena Mares to cap off the dual and the tournament for GV. Mares showed off her clutch gene once again, delivering a feet to back, and leaving no doubts with the finish. The pin pushed the Vikings passed the Statesmen, 22-19 and a 3rd place finish at the NWCA NAIA National Championships.
