DES MOINES, IOWA Grand View made history tonight as they were the first women's wrestling dual to be broadcasted on PBS. GV took on No. 3 ranked William Penn University in a top three matchup. This dual was high paced and closely fought from top to bottom. Grand View comes up just short but a historic night for women's wrestling.
The night started out at 103 pounds as the Vikings No. 5 Judy Sandoval took on No. 14 Lily Zapata. Though Sandoval was down 7-1 after the first period, she came out firing in the second. She locked up a leg lace to take the lead 9-7. Although a great effort, Sandoval ties is up 11-11 but comes up short by criteria. No. 7 Tristan Nitta entered next and received a forfeit. The next match was at 117 pounds as No. 9 Mayangelie Colon takes on No. 1 ranked Christianah Ogunsanya. Colon with an early takedown but doesn't hang on against undefeated Ogunsanya. The 124-pound match was up next as No. 13 Catie Campbell faced No. 4 Joanna Vanderwood. Campbell with great action throughout the match but losing by decision. Next up at 131 pounds was No. 2 ranked 124 pounds wrestler, Maya Davis and No. 6 Devin Patton. Davis was down 2-0 early but a beautiful lateral drop to earn 4 points got her right into the match. Davis starts the second period down two but was still hunting for big moves. Davis with a great second effort on another lateral and this time she wasn't letting go. Davis gets the fall just before intermission to take the lead for the Vikings, 12-11. Adrienna Turner toed the line next for GV at 138 pounds to face No. 5 Kendall Bostelman. Turner comes up short but secures a team point on the way. Next up is 145 with No. 6 Krista Warren takes on No. 1 ranked wrestler at 138 pounds, Esther Kolawole. Warren came up short but next up was 160 pounds. GV wrestled Emmalee Spurgeon against WPU's Caitlyn Davis. Spurgeon with a great feet-to-back four in the first but lost a nail biter 8-6. Grand View's Yarissa Gallo wrestled next for the Vikings against No. 9 America Lopez. Gallo with a couple low singles to close the deficit but not enough for the comeback, though a hard-fought match. To end the night, No. 1 Olivia Brown faced Phoebe Burt. Brown showed dominance in her ties and controlled the match throughout. Brown earned herself a tech fall 10-0. Grand View falls just short, 19-25.
