MARSHALL, MISSOURI - The Grand View women's wrestling team traveled to compete in the Missouri Valley Open this past weekend. The Vikings showcased their depth and talent with four wrestlers earning podium finishes in the tournament.
110 lbs - Eliana Martinez (4th Place)
Eliana Martinez put together an impressive run to the podium at 110 pounds. Martinez received a first-round bye before recording back-to-back falls over Avy Perez (William Penn) in 1:41 and Damiyah Smith (Iowa Central) in 2:18 to advance to the quarterfinals.
After a tough 8-6 decision loss to Adriana Gomez (Colorado Mesa) in the quarterfinals, Martinez dropped to the consolation bracket. She dominated the consolation rounds with a 40-second fall over Aneth Campos (Iowa Central) and a 6-2 decision over teammate Lita Cruz to reach the consolation semifinals.
Martinez defeated Trinity Pendergrass (Quincy) 9-7 in the consolation semifinals to secure a spot in the third-place match. In the third-place bout, she fell to Ava Bayless (Iowa) by technical fall 11-0 in 1:57, finishing fourth overall.
110 lbs - Lita Cruz (7th Place)
Lita Cruz also had a strong showing at 110 pounds, earning seventh place. Cruz opened with consecutive technical falls over Gabriella Motz (Albion) 10-0 in 3:00 and Rachel Corley (Tarleton State) 10-0 in 2:35. She continued her dominant run with a fall over Alexandra Tchekounova (Quincy) in 5:51 to reach the quarterfinals.
Cruz fell to Gabriele Tedesco (McKendree) by technical fall 11-0 in 3:37 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, she defeated teammate Keana Bush 17-10 before falling to teammate Eliana Martinez 6-2 in the consolation semifinals.
Cruz bounced back to win the seventh-place match, defeating Alexandra Tchekounova 8-7 in a rematch.
207 lbs - Andjela Prijovic (6th Place)
Andjela Prijovic had an outstanding tournament run at 207 pounds, finishing in sixth place. After opening with a 6-1 decision over Christina Page (Central Methodist), Prijovic fell to Hayeni Costa (Lindsey Wilson) 6-4 in the championship quarterfinals.
Prijovic dominated the consolation bracket with an impressive five-match winning streak. She received a bye in consolation round 2, then recorded falls over Alyson Krum (Hawkeye CC) in 3:45, Hailey Conley (Fort Hays State) in 3:19, and Alexis Llamas (Hastings) in 2:24. She followed with a technical fall over Taina Uasike (Adams State) 10-0 in 4:31 and a 5-0 decision over Loghan Sumner (Missouri Baptist) to reach the consolation semifinals.
In the consolation semifinals, Prijovic fell to Carla Campos (Texas Wesleyan) by fall in 1:49. She finished her tournament with a 6-3 decision loss to Haley Ward (Avila) in the fifth-place match, securing sixth place overall.
160 lbs - Nicole Olson (5th Place)
Nicole Olson delivered a strong performance at 160 pounds to earn fifth place. Olson opened with three consecutive victories in the championship bracket - a fall over Marissa Porsch (Fort Hays State) in 3:00, a fall over Maria Slaughter (Unattached) in 2:52, and a technical fall over Kristal Zamora (University of Saint Mary) 10-0 in 4:20 to reach the quarterfinals.
Olson fell to Billie Bonwell (Southeast CC) by fall in 4:14 in the quarterfinals. She was unable to compete in her consolation match due to injury, finishing in fifth place.
Other Grand View Results
Several other Vikings competed at the tournament. At 110 pounds, Keana Bush advanced through the consolation bracket with wins before falling to teammate Cruz. At 131 pounds, Jasmine Serrano won two matches before being eliminated in consolation round 5. At 145 pounds, Haidyn Snyder, Sofia Delgado, and Maria Sanfiel all competed, with Delgado advancing to consolation round 4. At 124 pounds, Isabella Silva won three matches before being eliminated. At 207 pounds, Ariana Chavez won one match before being eliminated in consolation round 4.
UP NEXT
The Women's Wrestling team will compete again after Thanksgiving break, in a conference dual against No. 3 William Penn University. The high-level dual will begin at 7:00 PM on December 3rd.
