MARSHALL, MISSOURI – The women's wrestling team traveled down to Missouri to compete in the Missouri Valley Open on Saturday. The No. 1 ranked Vikings brought down 13 wrestlers to this competitive early season tournament. The best performances for GV came from 117-pound Mayangelie Colon, Andjela Prijovic at 180 pounds and Bella Porcelli in the 207-pound bracket.
Mayangelie Colon went 2-2 on the weekend but a huge win came in her first match of the tournament. Colon stuck No. 4 ranked Katherine Heath of Baker University in the second period. Colon continued her roll with a tech fall against Jacianna Beltran of Valiant. In the quarterfinals Colon dropped her first match to No. 3 ranked Zao Estrada of William Penn. The Viking took another loss following this by Colorado Mesa's Marjorie McDaniel. Colon wrestled tough competition all day and showed signs of breakthrough early in the season.
Andjela Prijovic tournament started off hot with a fall in round one over Texas Women's University wrester Audrina Mauldin. Prijovic finds a tech fall victory in round two over Carlea Grissom of Campbellsville University. Prijovic then just short in round three against No. 6 ranked India Page of Lindsey Wilson. The Grand View wrestler bounced back with a close 6-6 victory over another TWU wrestler Pauline Grace Heimuli and a round 5 win over conference opponent Nevaeh Wardlow of Baker by way of tech fall. Prijovic fell short in her blood round match to Madison Sandquist but a wonderful 4-2 record on the weekend and a hard-fought performance.
Freshman Bella Porcelli found the most team points for Grand View this weekend including all 4 wins receiving bonus points. Porcelli had tech falls over Kendall Braswell of Jarvis Christian, and Baker University wrestler Kara Pope. Round three found her first loss of the tournament over high end wrestler, No. 3 Maquoia Bernabe out of the University of the Cumberlands. Porcelli's next two wins came by fall over Deanna Eastman (University of Alberta) and Texas Wesleyan's No. 18 ranked Abigail Fonseca. Porcelli lost her blood round match as well, falling to Alivia White (Iowa).
Other top performers for the Vikings included Avangeline Turner (3-2) and Madyson Gray (3-2) who both wrestled in the 145-pound bracket.
