OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS – The Grand View Vikings went down to Kansas this weekend to compete in the Heart of America Conference Fall Preview. The men played at the Nicklaus Golf Course at Lionsgate, which plays as a par-72. The tournament consisted of 10 schools from the Heart, golfing 36-holes over the two days. The Vikings sat in 3rd place after the first round on Monday, as Calvin McNeeley led the group with a 75 (+3) and top five in the field entering day two. The second round on Tuesday had the Vikings falling back to a 5th place finish for the event. They ended at 620 (+44) strokes combined and the difference between 5th and 2nd place was only eight strokes.
The Vikings sophomore Harrison Froling had the highest individual finish of the tournament for Grand View, with a total 8-over par in the 36 holes. It was a tale of two halves for Froling, as he finished the Monday round with an 80 (+8) flat. Tuesday, he responded well, bouncing back with 4 birdies and the lowest round of the event for the Vikings. An even par 72 (E) on the day boosted him 17 spots up the leaderboard into T9 place and a top 10 finish to end fall competition.
McNeeley and Jack Winkel weren't far behind, both finishing top 20 in the field of 57 individuals. McNeeley fired a 78 (+6) for the final 18 holes after his before mentioned 75 (+3). A solo 16th place but only one stroke back from Froling. Winkel was back on the course this week and showed his consistency throughout the tournament. He turned in a 78 (+6), 79 (+7) on the scorecards and a T20 finish.
Rounding out the Vikings was Gabe Beardsley and Krish Gupta. A first round 79 (+7) for both golfers but a different way to get there. Beardsley shot 5-under on the par fives in round one, with 2 eagles! He was even par through 13 holes before having a rough patch to end the day. Gupta battled throughout the round, shooting 39 front nine, and 40 back. The second round proved to be a tougher test, as they both couldn't find their rhythm to get going. Gupta finished 26th for the tournament with a 15-over par total. Beardsley clocked in at 20-over par to finish.
