ANKENY, IOWA – Grand View hosted the Vikings Classic this week at Otter Creek Golf Course. The tournament included 12 teams for the two-day tournament. Grand View was fortunate enough to bring two squads (A and B) to the field of play, making for a fun weekend. The A team finished in solo second place for the tournament with a combined stroke score of 588 (+20) over the 36 holes of golf. Grand View (B) finished with 623 (+55) strokes and 11th place finish for the event.
GRAND VIEW (A)
The Vikings (A) were led by the co-leaders in the club house! Gabe Beardsley and Harrison Froling finished T1 on the home course, with a 3-under total. Froling shot 70 (-1) on Monday with 3 bogeys but 4 birdies on the day. Taking advantage of two par 5's and a three on the 16th to bring him into red numbers. Round two Froling continued his great play and cashed in on all three par 5's the course offered. He was on a flawless, bogey-free round until the 18th ! Froling finished with a 69 (-2) on day two. Beardsley had the opposite two rounds, bringing in a scorecard of 69 (-2) in round one, and a 70 (-1) on Tuesday's final 18. His Monday round was a battle, as he tripled the 3rd hole of the day, and was sitting 3-over through the first four holes. Beardsley went on a run after that, finishing with five birdies and six total on the day. The second round was much more level, firing 1-under with 3 bogeys but 4 birdies. A birdie on the last knotted him up at the top of the leaderboard.
Calvin McNeeley finished in the front third of the field with a 78 (+7) in round one and a 74 (+3) on the final day. His battle back on Tuesday brought him up 6 spots to finish 28th . Logan Barnes and Dylan Susemihl fill out the last two spots for Grand View (A) this week. They finished 16 and 17 over par for the 36-holes.
The team struck the ball well and took advantage of the knowledge on the course this week. The team is looking forward to their final tournament for the fall season.
GRAND VIEW (B)
The Vikings' second team was led by Krish Gupta who finished 22nd in the tournament this week. After a first round 77 (+6), Gupta followed up with a 73 (+2) on the scorecard in round two, climbing up 6 spots!
Charlie McDonald followed three strokes behind, with an 11 over par finish in the Viking Classic. He seemed to navigate the course better on the second day as well, firing a 75 (+4).
To wrap up the competition, Maddux Weeks and Ethan King. The two had quite different days. Weeks had an unsettling start to the Classic, struggling to find his swing. The second 18 holes of play on Tuesday was a much different story. Weeks looked great and seemed to find his comfort zone on the course. He finished with a 74 (+3) and left the tournament with a lot to build off. King ended up shooting 19 over for the tournament with a 78 (+7) in round one and found a little more struggle in day two.
Overall, a solid outing for the gentlemen and with the fall season closing soon, they have a lot to look at and time to work on their craft for the winter months. The Grand View Viking Classic was a success and much appreciation to Otter Creek Golf Course for hosting the event for the University.
