PARK CITY, KANSAS - Grand View women's wrestling brought 12 wrestlers down to Wichita to compete in the 2025 NAIA National Championships this weekend. The first day included two sessions of wrestling and two Vikings earned their way into the semifinal. 5-seeded
Judy Sandoval in the 103-pound bracket, and top-seeded
Olivia Brown at 207. Grand View earned six total All-Americans that will have their sights on the highest spot available on the podium, come tomorrow.
Session I
In Session One, the Vikings put together strong performances while navigating the challenges of the national tournament.
At 103 pounds,
Judy Sandoval started her day with a bye before securing a fall in the second round. Fellow 8-seed
Devyn Moore also received a bye but was unable to advance after dropping her next two matches.
The Vikings had two competitors at 110 pounds, both making quick work of their opening rounds. Fifth-seeded
Lita Cruz dominated with two pins in under three minutes, while 7-seed
Tristan Nitta mirrored that performance with two falls of her own.
At 117 pounds, No. 4 seed
Cailin Campbell and No. 6 seed
Mayangelie Colon had similar results, each earning a first-round bye before notching technical falls over their respective opponents. The success continued at 124 pounds, where 6-seed
Maya Davis took down Anna Krejsa of LIFE after an opening bye.
Catie Campbell faced a tough matchup against No. 4 seed Jasmina Immaeva of MVC, falling in her opening bout, but responded with a pin in the consolation bracket to keep her All-American hopes alive heading into Session Two.
Grand View's momentum carried over to the upper weights. At 145 pounds, No. 5 seed
Krista Warren received a bye before securing a first-period fall to move into the quarterfinals. Freshman
Emmalee Spurgeon, competing at 160 pounds, battled hard but fell 5-1 to 5-seed Josette Partney. However, a bye in the consolation round kept her tournament run alive.
The final two Vikings took the mat at 207 pounds, both making strong statements. Top-seeded
Olivia Brown showed why she holds the No. 1 ranking, opening with a 3-0 decision before earning a fall in the second round to secure her spot in the quarterfinals. Fellow 7-seed
Bella Porcelli was equally impressive, picking up back-to-back falls to punch her ticket to the next round.
Session II
SESSION II // QUARTERFINALS
Sandoval opened the quarterfinals for the Vikings with a hard-fought match against 4-seed Karina Vang of Doane. With just 20 seconds remaining, she secured a clutch fall to advance to the semifinals and earn All-American status.
Tristan Nitta battled No. 2 seed Stefana Jelacic in a gritty quarterfinal bout but ultimately fell 7-0.
Cailin Campbell faced 5-seed Jasmine Howard but struggled to generate offense, dropping her match by the same score.
Mayangelie Colon also put up a strong fight against 3-seed Salyna Shotwell of Life but was sent to the blood round. At 124 pounds,
Maya Davis fell 11-1 to 3-seed Joanna Vanderwood of WPU, while
Krista Warren suffered a loss to Missouri Valley's Sevreign Aumua.
At 207 pounds, top-seeded
Olivia Brown continued her dominant run, securing another first-period fall to cement her All-American honors.
Bella Porcelli, however, fell short against 2-seed Kathryn Hingano, moving to the consolation bracket.
Consolation Blood Round
Nitta rebounded from her quarterfinal loss in impressive fashion, pinning Jenna Gerhardt to secure All-American status. She will continue wrestling tomorrow to improve her podium placement.
At 124 pounds, both Vikings displayed resilience.
Catie Campbell strung together three consecutive victories, including a crucial round-of-12 win over Ellabelle Taylor, to earn All-American honors.
Maya Davis responded to her quarterfinal loss with a dominant first-period fall over Malia Welch, securing her own All-American recognition and advancing to Day Two.
UP NEXT
Day Two of the NAIA National Championships kicks off tomorrow, March 15th, at 10 AM with Session III, where wrestlers will compete for placement. The tournament will culminate with the Championship Finals at 7 PM.
