WAUKEE, IA – This past Friday saw the Viking shooting sports team kick off their fall season with a three day event at the Simpson Invitational.
The event saw nine colleges competing in four events. Friday afternoon the Viking squads shot in the Skeet event which found them shooting their rounds alongside the Simpson squads in a deluge of rain which made things difficult for both squads, but Sophomore
Braeden Hirsch posted a great score of 92 of 100 and 2 other Vikings (Freshman Will Hinrichs, Junior
Cole Haynes) saw scores of 90 out of 100 regardless of the conditions.
Saturday was a great day for some Super Sporting, which once again saw
Braeden Hirsch with the top score for the Vikings with a 45 out of 50 just 4 targets hit, and just a few shy of the leaders.
Sunday morning started with the Trap Shooting event, which is normally the strength for the Vikings, but that wasn't the case today as Grand Views squads only had 3 members breaking in the 90's out of 100 targets thrown, including sophomore
Braeden Hirsch,
Cole Haynes, and freshman Will Hinrichs.
Sunday afternoon the Vikings headed to the woods for the Sporting Clay event with
Cole Haynes being the Top Gun for the Vikings with a score of 89 out of 100.
"The weekend was a bit tougher than expected for the Vikings, but we now have our foundation for the season. I think we have a good team this year and I expect us to move UP from here. This weekend's 6
th place finish out of 9 teams is no measure of the heart of this squad and the untapped potential that they possess. I'm excited to move deeper into the schedule and find out just how good this squad can be!" said head coach
Charlie Mundy.
