Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The Grand View women's basketball team looked to extend their perfect conference record to 5-0 as they took on the Mount Mercy Mustangs on the road. The Vikings (7-3, 4-0) faced a tough test from the Mustangs (5-4, 2-1) in the first half but took a 33-19 lead into the locker room.
The opening quarter started slow for both teams as they traded baskets early.
Eva Solseth got the Vikings on the board first with a free throw, but Mount Mercy responded to take a brief 2-1 lead. The game remained tight as neither team could establish offensive rhythm.
Ellie Knock and
Anna Gossling hit free throws to give Grand View a 6-4 lead, and Solseth knocked down a three-pointer assisted by
Lily Smith to extend it to 10-4. Mount Mercy's Aubrey Luvan answered with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 10-7, but Gossling caught fire with back-to-back three-pointers, topped off by a late Knock three-pointer assisted by
Amaya Davison. Grand View held a slim 19-17 lead heading into the second quarter.
Gossling continued her hot shooting into the second quarter with an early jumper to make it 21-17.
Taryn Ottemann provided a spark off the bench with a layup, and Gossling added yet another triple assisted by Smith to push the advantage to 26-17. The Vikings built their lead as
Claire Galbraith and Davison converted free throws, and Gossling capped her dominant first half with two more from the line to give Grand View a 33-19 halftime lead.
Grand View came out strong in the third quarter and never looked back. Davison scored a layup and hit a free throw to extend the lead to 36-21, and Ottemann and Galbraith added back-to-back layups to push it to 40-21. Gossling continued her stellar performance with a layup and a jump shot as the Vikings built their advantage. Mount Mercy struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Grand View's stifling defense. The Vikings shot an impressive 57.9% from the field in the quarter while holding the Mustangs to just 33.3% shooting. Gossling hit another three-pointer to make it 49-27, and the Vikings took a commanding 57-35 lead into the final period.
The fourth quarter saw the Vikings maintain their comfortable cushion. Ottemann caught fire with back-to-back three-pointers assisted by
Eva Peterson and Solseth to extend the lead to 63-40. Gossling added a layup and a three-pointer assisted by Galbraith to push the advantage to 68-42. The Vikings emptied their bench in the final minutes as Grand View cruised to the 68-45 victory to remain undefeated in conference play.
