ATCHISON, KAN. — Grand View ran into a quick deficit and couldn't climb out of it, falling 2-0 on the road to Benedictine on Wednesday at Legacy Field. The loss drops Grand View to 2-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
Benedictine needed just under two minutes to get on the board, striking early to put the Ravens ahead. Grand View settled in after the quick blow, and goalkeeper Maya Fritz came up with a string of saves to keep the margin at one, turning away several Benedictine looks over the rest of the half. Grand View got a chance of its own in the 19th minute when Gracie Sullivan fired a shot just wide, but the Ravens controlled most of the possession and territory. Benedictine doubled its lead right before the break, scoring in the 43rd minute to send the Ravens into halftime up 2-0.
Grand View made a goalkeeper change to start the second half, with Janette De la Cruz-Jimenez taking over in net, and the Vikings' defense tightened up considerably. Benedictine continued to generate chances and corner kicks throughout the frame, but De la Cruz-Jimenez turned away shot after shot to keep the Ravens off the board the rest of the way. Grand View picked up a yellow card in the 72nd minute but otherwise held firm defensively, with Valeria Gonzalez's early blocked shot the Vikings' best look of the half.
