DES MOINES, IA – Grand View and Culver-Stockton played to a 2-2 draw on Homecoming night at Cownie Soccer Complex on Saturday, as Soleil Collins and Gracie Sullivan each found the net for the Vikings, who led 2-1 midway through the second half before the Wildcats leveled the match in the 72nd minute.
Culver-Stockton struck first in the sixth minute. Grand View earned a corner kick in the 11th minute through Riley Pryor, then went to its bench in search of an answer, bringing on Adyson Little, Dakota Enikova and Collins in the 21st minute and Dayana Espinoza, Jackie Riveros-Oritz and Sophia Lavariega in the 31st. The fresh legs sparked the attack. Riveros-Oritz and Enikova forced back to back saves in the 33rd and 34th minutes, and Little sent a shot just wide left in the 40th.
Collins finally broke through in the 43rd minute, scoring unassisted about 22 minutes after entering off the bench to tie the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Grand View turned to Janette De la cruz-J in goal to start the second half, and the Wildcats came out pushing early. The Vikings were the ones to strike, though, as Valeria Gonzalez set up Sullivan in the 53rd minute for Grand View's first lead of the night at 2-1.
Culver-Stockton kept the pressure on from there. Grand View looked for an insurance goal, with Collins firing wide right in the 60th and Taylor Pattee going high in the 68th, but the Wildcats found the equalizer in the 72nd minute to make it 2-2.
De la cruz-J kept Grand View level the rest of the way, making saves in the 72nd, 78th, 81st, 84th and 87th minutes to finish with five, all after the Wildcats' equalizer. Abigail Davis had the Vikings' best late look with a shot over the bar in the 76th minute. Grand View was shown a team yellow card in the 85th minute, and Pryor picked up a caution in the 87th, but the Vikings held on to close out the draw.
Saturday's result was Grand View's second tie of the season, moving the Vikings to 2-6-2 overall (1-4-2 in conference).
