DES MOINES, IA — Grand View wasted no time again, racing out to a 2-0 lead inside the first eight minutes and never looking back in a 4-0 win over Central Methodist on Saturday at Cownie Soccer Complex. The win moves Grand View to 4-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while Central Methodist falls to 2-2-3 overall and 0-2-2 in league action.
Grand View put its foot down immediately. Wilmont Manneh opened the scoring in the 6th minute off an assist from Herman Furumo, and just over two minutes later Furumo returned the favor, finishing a feed from Braden Schoene to make it 2-0 before the game was even ten minutes old. Central Methodist tried to answer, testing Luis Helm early with a shot from inside the box, but Helm and the Grand View backline stood firm. The Eagles picked up a caution in the 16th minute as the physical play picked up, and Central Methodist continued to push for a response, but Grand View's defense held strong through the rest of the half. Pau Gonzalez, who had entered as a substitute for Manneh, added a third goal in the 33rd minute to send Grand View into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.
The second half followed a similar script. Central Methodist created a handful of half-chances — a header that sailed high and a couple of shots that missed the frame — but couldn't find a way past Helm and the Grand View defense. Grand View, meanwhile, kept adding to its lead, with Lucas Newhard capping the scoring in the 62nd minute off a Manneh assist to make it 4-0. Central Methodist continued to press in the closing stages, picking up a corner kick and a few more shot attempts down the stretch, but the Eagles couldn't break through. Grand View picked up a late yellow card in the 90th minute but closed out the shutout to secure the four-goal victory.
