ATCHISON, KAN. — Grand View got on the board in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second to close out a 2-0 road win over Benedictine on Tuesday at Legacy Field. The win moves Grand View to 5-4-1 overall and 4-2-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
Grand View controlled much of the early play, with Herman Furumo testing the Benedictine goalkeeper in the 6th minute and picking up a corner kick a few minutes later. After a stretch of back-and-forth fouls and a pair of yellow cards on Grand View, the Vikings broke through in the 24th minute as Lucas Newhard buried his sixth goal of the season to make it 1-0. Grand View continued to push for a second, with Newhard, Hayato Yoshitake, Anthony Ulloa and Furumo all generating looks over the remainder of the half, but Benedictine's goalkeeper and defense held on to keep it a one-goal game at the break. The Ravens had their best chance of the half late, forcing a save from Luis Helm in the 42nd minute, but Grand View carried the 1-0 edge into halftime.
Benedictine came out with more urgency to start the second half, stringing together a few corner kicks and shots — including a blocked attempt and a header wide off the ensuing set pieces — as the Ravens pushed for an equalizer. Grand View weathered the pressure and answered in the 59th minute, as Dylan Hunston doubled the lead off an assist from Ulloa to make it 2-0. Benedictine continued to create chances down the stretch, drawing a save out of Helm in the 71st minute, but couldn't find a way through. Grand View had several more looks late from Kais Sabic, Kendall Guzman, Newhard and Ulloa, and despite a couple of late Benedictine yellow cards and a final push from the Ravens, Grand View closed out the shutout win.
