ST. LOUIS, MO — Missouri Baptist scored in each half and held off a stubborn Grand View side that missed a late penalty kick, as the Spartans edged the Vikings 2-1 on Saturday night. Despite the result, Grand View controlled large stretches of play, out-shooting Missouri Baptist 17-12 overall and 8-7 on goal, but couldn't find the equalizer when it mattered most. The loss drops Grand View to 2-5-1 overall and 1-3-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while Missouri Baptist improves to 4-0-3 overall and 2-0-1 in conference.
Grand View was the more active side out of the gate, with Herman Furumo winning an early corner kick in the 5th minute that led to a header from Braden Schoene, saved by the Missouri Baptist goalkeeper. The Vikings kept generating looks throughout the opening 20 minutes, with a shot from Hayato Yoshitake also turned away, but the Spartans' defense held firm. Missouri Baptist broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, converting a goal off an assist to make it 1-0. Furumo had one more look before the goal but was denied, and Grand View continued to press, out-shooting the Spartans 10-3 in the first half alone, but went into the break down a goal.
The second half opened with more of the same as Grand View pushed for an equalizer. Xavier Roy picked up a yellow card in the 55th minute, and shortly after, Kais Sabic had a header saved in the 67th minute. Missouri Baptist doubled its lead in the 74th minute to go up 2-0, but Grand View answered quickly. Lucas Newhard found the back of the net in the 80th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 and set up a tense final stretch. The Vikings continued to push, and in the 87th minute earned a golden opportunity when Anthony Ulloa drew a penalty kick, but Furumo's attempt from the spot went wide, keeping the score at 2-1. Grand View pressed for the equalizer in the closing minutes but couldn't break through, as the match ended with a flurry of fouls and a pair of yellow cards in stoppage time — one on Grand View's Dylan Hunston and one on a Missouri Baptist player.
