One Swing, One Run: Vikings Advance with Shutout Win

Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Grand View opened postseason play with a battle, squaring off against No. 6 seed William Woods University in the first round of the Heart of America Conference Tournament at Busse Field. In a game defined by dominant pitching and limited opportunities, the Vikings found a way late, walking off the Owls with a 1-0 victory on Thursday afternoon.
GRAND VIEW 1, WILLIAM WOODS 0
From the first pitch, it was clear runs would be at a premium.
Madeline Waldorf delivered one of the most dominant outings of the season, setting the tone early and never letting up. The right-hander was electric in the circle, striking out 15 batters across seven shutout innings while allowing just one hit and no walks. Waldorf faced only 23 batters and retired the side in order in five of seven innings, keeping the Owls completely off balance.
William Woods' Taylor Baumhoer matched Waldorf pitch for pitch through much of the contest. The Vikings managed just three hits on the afternoon, struggling to generate consistent offense against the Owls' starter.
As the innings passed, tension built.
Waldorf slammed the door in the sixth inning with three consecutive strikeouts, preserving the scoreless tie and shifting momentum toward the Vikings heading into their final at-bat.
Grand View began to piece things together in the bottom of the sixth. Chloe Kottlowski dropped down a bunt single to spark a potential rally, but the Vikings were unable to capitalize, sending the game into the seventh still deadlocked at 0-0.
Then came the breakthrough.
Nevaeh Randall opened the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side, immediately putting pressure on the Owls' defense. Caedence Risius followed with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt to move Randall into scoring position. After Alexia Jarrett worked a walk and Reese Cooley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Ceara Swanson stepped to the plate with a chance to end it.
Swanson delivered.
The sophomore lifted a fly ball to left field, deep enough to bring Randall home from third, sealing a 1-0 walk-off victory for the Vikings.
In a game where every pitch mattered, Grand View capitalized when it counted most.
The Vikings finished with three hits, including singles from Randall, Risius, and Kottlowski. Swanson accounted for the game's lone RBI with her clutch sacrifice fly in the seventh.
But the story of the day was Waldorf.
Her 15-strikeout performance not only secured the shutout but marked one of the most dominant pitching displays of the season, carrying Grand View into the next round of the conference tournament.
It was composure. It was execution. It was postseason softball.
