Vikings Stay Alive, Fall Just Short in Semifinals

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA. – Grand View continued its run through the elimination bracket Saturday afternoon, earning a statement win over No. 6 seeded William Woods University before falling in a tightly contested semifinal matchup against top-seeded Missouri Baptist at the Heart of America Conference Tournament. The split brings the Vikings' tournament run to a close as they await a potential at-large bid.

GRAND VIEW 5, WILLIAM WOODS 1
Facing elimination once again, the Vikings delivered a complete performance behind dominant pitching and timely hitting to take down the Owls.
Grand View struck first in the second inning, manufacturing runs with discipline at the plate. Gabriella Taber worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in the game's first run, and Chloe Kottlowski followed with an RBI single to left center to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Vikings continued to apply pressure in the fifth. Alexia Jarrett came through with a clutch single up the middle, plating Grace Anderson and pushing the advantage to 3-0.
Meanwhile, Madeline Waldorf was in command in the circle. The right-hander kept the Owls off balance all afternoon, allowing just two hits through six innings of work while striking out seven.
William Woods broke through for a run in the sixth, but Grand View answered immediately. In the bottom half, Nevaeh Randall delivered the biggest swing of the game, ripping a two-run single to left center to score Anderson and Elle Nelsen and extend the lead to 5-1.
From there, the Vikings shut the door. Addison Halstead entered in the seventh and secured the final three outs to send Grand View into the semifinals.
Grand View totaled six hits in the win, with Reese Cooley leading the way with a pair of hits. Randall and Jarrett each drove in key runs, while Anderson scored twice at the top of the lineup.
It was efficient offense paired with dominant pitching — exactly what the Vikings needed to stay alive.

MISSOURI BAPTIST 3, GRAND VIEW 2
In the semifinal matchup against the top-seeded Spartans, the Vikings battled to the final out but came up just short in a one-run game.
After a scoreless first three innings, Grand View broke through in the fourth. Alexia Jarrett lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Bianca Prickett and giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Missouri Baptist responded in the fifth, tying the game with an RBI single. The Spartans then seized control in the sixth, using a triple and a single to plate two runs and take a 3-1 advantage.
The Vikings refused to go quietly.
In the seventh, Chloe Kottlowski came around to score on an RBI double by Elle Nelsen, cutting the deficit to one and putting the tying run in scoring position. Grand View threatened late, but the Spartans were able to record the final out and escape with the win.
The Vikings matched Missouri Baptist with eight hits on the afternoon. Caedence Risius led the way with two hits, while Nelsen, Randall, Jarrett, Cooley, Taber, and Kottlowski each contributed offensively.
In the circle, Risius delivered three scoreless innings to start before Molly Breeding took over and battled through the middle frames.
Despite the loss, Grand View showed resilience and competitiveness against the tournament's top seed, pushing the Spartans to the brink.
