Grand View Gets Their Revenge on Morningside

DES MOINES, IOWA – The Vikings hosted Morningside University on Tuesday evening for a conference matchup. In a thrilling five-set battle, Grand View emerged victorious 25-21, 22-25, 26-28, 25-18, 15-7. The Vikings improved to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in Heart of America Conference play.

The opening set saw Grand View dominate early. Andre Lucas Alves Leandro opened with a kill from Joshua Valencia, and Guilherme Domdei Goedert scored from Leandro to make it 2-0. Jonathan Rzepa added a kill from Domdei Goedert, and Chris Davis connected on one from Jake Winters to extend the lead to 4-0.

Rzepa delivered another kill, and Leandro scored from Valencia to give the Vikings a commanding 6-0 advantage. Morningside called timeout, but Davis added a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 7-5. Leandro contributed to tie the set at 9-9, and Valencia helped set up Rzepa and Marcus Taylor for a block to give Grand View a 12-11 lead.

Davis scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 14-13, and blocked an attack to extend the lead to 15-13. Rzepa added a kill from Domdei Goedert to tie the set at 16-16, and Winters delivered one to pull ahead 17-17. Leandro scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 20-19, and Davis added a kill to extend the lead to 21-20.

Rzepa connected on a kill to make it 22-20, and Leandro scored from Domdei Goedert to give the Vikings set point at 23-20. Davis and Rzepa combined for a block to close out the opening set 25-21.

The second set started with Davis scoring from Domdei Goedert to tie it at 1-1. Rzepa added a kill from Leandro, and Domdei Goedert contributed to give Grand View a 3-1 lead. Davis and Rzepa combined for a block to extend the advantage to 4-1, but Morningside fought back.

Leandro delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 6-5, and Cheikh Sou scored from Domdei Goedert to pull ahead 7-6. Sou and Taylor combined for a block to give the Vikings a 9-8 lead, and Leandro added kills to pull within 14-13.

Domdei Goedert scored to tie the set at 17-17, and Leandro connected on a kill from Taylor to give Grand View an 18-17 lead. The teams traded points, and Grand View called two timeouts trailing 22-19 and 24-22, but Morningside took the second set 25-22.

The third set saw the Vikings start strong. Rzepa opened with a kill from Domdei Goedert, and Domdei Goedert recorded a service ace to give Grand View a 3-0 lead. Rzepa added another kill to make it 4-2, and connected on one more from Domdei Goedert to pull ahead 5-4.

Sou delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 6-4, and Leandro scored from Winters to extend the lead to 7-5. Davis added a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 9-8, and Davis contributed again to pull ahead 10-11. Leandro and Rzepa combined for a block, and Davis blocked an attack to give Grand View a 13-12 lead.

Winters delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 14-13, and Valencia recorded a service ace to extend the lead to 15-13. Winters added kills to push the advantage to 18-15, and Sou scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 19-17.

Rzepa connected on a kill from Domdei Goedert to give Grand View a 20-18 lead, and Leandro added one to extend the advantage to 21-19. Rzepa delivered another kill to make it 22-20, and Winters scored from Domdei Goedert to give the Vikings a 24-23 lead. Morningside called timeout, and the set went into extra points. Grand View called timeout at 26-25, but Morningside took the third set 28-26.

The fourth set started with Domdei Goedert opening the scoring. Valencia contributed as Grand View jumped out to a 4-2 lead. Leandro and Sou combined for blocks, and Winters and Sou added another to extend the lead to 6-2.

Winters recorded a service ace to make it 9-8, and Leandro scored from Domdei Goedert to give the Vikings a 10-9 lead. Davis added a kill from Taylor to extend the advantage to 11-9, and Davis connected on another kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 13-11.

Rzepa delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert, and blocked an attack to give Grand View a 15-13 lead. Rzepa added another kill to extend the advantage to 16-14, and Leandro contributed to make it 18-14. Morningside called timeout, and Valencia helped set up Winters for a kill from Leandro to push the lead to 19-14.

Winters contributed, and Taylor scored to extend Grand View's lead to 22-16. Sou delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 23-17, and Rzepa added one to give the Vikings set point at 24-18. Domdei Goedert closed out the fourth set with a service ace, forcing a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth set, Rzepa opened with a kill from Domdei Goedert to tie it at 1-1. Leandro scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 2-2, and Winters added a kill to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead. Leandro and Sou combined for a block to extend the lead to 4-2, and Leandro delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 5-3.

Winters scored from Domdei Goedert to tie the set at 6-6, and Sou connected on a kill to give Grand View a 7-6 lead. Winters contributed to make it 8-6, and Davis added a kill from Taylor to extend the advantage to 9-6.

Sou went on a dominant run, scoring from Domdei Goedert and delivering kills to push the lead to 10-7. Davis connected on a kill from Taylor to make it 11-7, and Morningside called timeout. Sou continued to dominate, and Rzepa added a kill from Taylor to extend Grand View's lead to 13-7.

Sou contributed to make it 14-7, and the Vikings closed out the match 15-7 in the fifth set, securing the thrilling comeback victory.
