CANTON, MISSOURI – The Vikings traveled to Culver-Stockton University on Thursday evening for a conference matchup. After dropping the opening set, Grand View rallied to claim a four-set victory, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-17. The Vikings improved to 7-4 overall and 6-3 in Heart of America Conference play.
The opening set started with challenges for Grand View as the Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Andre Lucas Alves Leandro scored from Joshua Valencia to pull the Vikings within 1-2, but Culver-Stockton built a 6-3 advantage. Cheikh Sou and Marcus Taylor combined for consecutive blocks to tie the set at 6-6, and Taylor contributed to give Grand View a 7-6 lead.
The Vikings led 9-8 before the Wildcats went on a run to take a 15-9 lead. Grand View called timeout, and Jonathan Rzepa delivered a kill from Guilherme Domdei Goedert to make it 10-15. Leandro and Davis contributed to pull the Vikings within 16-19, and Sou scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 14-19.
Leandro recorded a service ace to pull Grand View within 16-20, but Culver-Stockton finished strong to take the opening set 25-21.
The second set saw the Vikings respond with momentum. Domdei Goedert orchestrated the offense as Grand View jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Leandro scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 3-3, and Winters and Sou combined for a block to give the Vikings a 5-5 lead.
Winters contributed to make it 6-6, and Taylor and Rzepa combined for a block to extend the lead to 11-8. Culver-Stockton called timeout, and Rzepa blocked an attack to make it 12-8. Davis added a kill from Taylor, and Rzepa and Taylor combined for another block to push the advantage to 14-8.
Davis scored from Leandro to make it 15-10, and Rzepa delivered a kill from Winters to extend the lead to 17-12. Culver-Stockton called timeout, and Leandro added a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 18-14. Sou connected on one from Domdei Goedert to give Grand View a 19-15 lead.
Davis scored from Sou to make it 20-16, and Taylor and Rzepa combined for a block to extend the advantage to 21-16. Domdei Goedert delivered a kill from Davis, and Leandro added back-to-back kills from Valencia and Domdei Goedert to close out the second set 25-19.
The third set started with Rzepa scoring from Domdei Goedert to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Rzepa and Leandro contributed to make it 4-4, and Pietro Fadanelli helped Grand View build momentum. Sou blocked an attack, and Davis and Sou combined for another block to give the Vikings a 6-4 lead.
Sou delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 7-5, and Valencia contributed to extend the lead to 8-5. Davis scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 9-8, and Domdei Goedert contributed to pull ahead 10-10. Leandro added a kill from Domdei Goedert to tie the set at 11-11, and Taylor blocked an attack to give Grand View a 13-13 tie.
Fadanelli and Sou helped the Vikings build their lead. Sou blocked an attack to make it 16-15, and Valencia recorded a service ace to extend the advantage to 17-15. Culver-Stockton called timeout, and Davis scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 18-16.
Domdei Goedert orchestrated a dominant run as Rzepa blocked an attack, and Leandro and Rzepa combined for another block to extend Grand View's lead to 20-16. Culver-Stockton called timeout, and Leandro delivered three consecutive kills to give the Vikings set point at 24-16. Leandro closed out the third set with a kill, securing a 25-16 victory.
The fourth set saw Grand View look to close out the match. Rzepa opened with a kill from Domdei Goedert to tie it at 1-1, and Fadanelli scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 2-3. Fadanelli added another kill to pull the Vikings within 3-5, and contributed to tie the set at 5-5.
Sou delivered a kill from Taylor to give Grand View a 6-5 lead, and Leandro recorded a service ace to extend the advantage to 7-5. Fadanelli scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 8-6, and Sou added a kill from Domdei Goedert to push the lead to 9-7.
Leandro connected on a kill from Taylor to give the Vikings a 10-7 lead, and Domdei Goedert contributed to make it 12-9. Rzepa delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to extend the advantage to 13-10, and Davis recorded a service ace to make it 14-10.
