Box Score 2 LAKELAND, FL – Grand View Softball battled tough against No. 19-ranked Southeastern University on Monday afternoon, but the Vikings dropped both ends of the doubleheader, falling 4–0 in the opener and 2–1 in a tightly contested nightcap. Strong pitching performances and timely defense from the Fire proved to be the difference in two competitive matchups.
GAME 1 | SOUTHEASTERN 4, GRAND VIEW 0
Game one turned into a pitcher's duel early, with both teams limited offensively through the first few innings. Southeastern struck first in the bottom of the first, using aggressive baserunning to manufacture a run and take a 1–0 lead.
The Fire added another run in the second, capitalizing on a passed ball to extend the advantage to 2–0. Despite the early deficit, Grand View settled in defensively behind
Madeline Waldorf, who kept the Vikings within striking distance.
Grand View's best scoring opportunities came from scattered hits, including a double off the bat of
Elle Nelsen and a single from
Ceara Swanson. However, the Vikings were unable to string together multiple hits, finishing with two on the day.
Southeastern created separation in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to left field, pushing the lead to 4–0. Waldorf completed six innings in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out five.
Nelsen paced the offense with a double, while Swanson added the Vikings' other hit as Grand View fell 4–0.
GAME 2 | SOUTHEASTERN 2, GRAND VIEW 1
The second game of the day proved to be a tightly contested battle from the start. Southeastern opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to take a 1–0 edge.
Grand View answered in the second inning.
Gabriella Taber reached base and later crossed the plate when
Peyton Naranjo lined a single, knotting the score at 1–1. The Vikings showed aggressiveness on the bases throughout the game, with
Grace Anderson and
Elle Nelsen swiping multiple bags to apply pressure.
The Fire regained the lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single to make it 2–1, a margin that would hold the rest of the way.
The Vikings threatened late, collecting four hits in the contest. Naranjo led the way with an RBI single, while Taber and
Caedence Risius each recorded hits. Despite putting runners aboard, Grand View was unable to find the equalizer.
Claire Leinen got the start, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing one run before
Molly Breeding took over in relief. Breeding struck out four over 3.2 innings, keeping the Vikings within one run and giving the offense opportunities down the stretch.
