DES MOINES, IOWA – The Vikings hosted Graceland University on Friday afternoon for a conference matchup. Grand View dominated from start to finish, sweeping the Yellowjackets 25-20, 25-14, 25-23. The Vikings improved to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in Heart of America Conference play.
The opening set started with Andre Lucas Alves Leandro scoring from Guilherme Domdei Goedert to give Grand View an early 1-0 lead. Jonathan Rzepa added a kill from Domdei Goedert, and Leandro connected on another from Joshua Valencia to make it 4-2.
Chris Davis went on a dominant serving run, recording back-to-back service aces to extend the Vikings' lead to 6-2. Jake Winters added a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 7-2, and Graceland called timeout. Rzepa delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to push the advantage to 8-3, and Winters scored from Rzepa to make it 9-3.
Winters and Davis continued to produce offensively as Grand View built their lead. Taylor and Rzepa combined for a block to give the Vikings a 15-8 advantage. Leandro added a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 16-9, and Sou connected on one to extend the lead to 19-12.
Winters and Sou combined for a block to give Grand View a 20-12 lead, and Graceland called timeout. Winters delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 21-14, and added another to extend the advantage to 23-16. Winters recorded a service ace to give the Vikings set point at 24-16, and Grand View closed out the opening set 25-20.
The second set saw Grand View continue their momentum. Domdei Goedert orchestrated the offense as Leandro and Davis scored early kills to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead. Leandro added another kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 4-5.
Rzepa went on an impressive run, recording a service ace and multiple kills to extend Grand View's lead to 10-6. Graceland called timeout, but Rzepa and Leandro kept the pressure on. Leandro and Winters connected on kills to push the advantage to 14-7.
Winters scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 15-8, and Leandro added one to extend the lead to 16-9. Davis contributed a kill from Taylor to give the Vikings a 17-9 advantage. Davis and Winters continued to dominate as Grand View built a commanding lead.
Winters and Rzepa each delivered kills from Domdei Goedert to make it 22-12. Rzepa contributed, and Sou scored from Domdei Goedert to give Grand View set point at 24-14. Leandro closed out the second set with a service ace, securing a 25-14 victory.
The third set saw Graceland battle to stay in the match. Rzepa opened with a kill from Domdei Goedert to tie the set at 1-1, and connected on another to make it 2-3. Leandro contributed to pull the Vikings within 4-5, and Sou scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 5-7.
Davis delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 6-9, and Valencia contributed as Grand View fought back. Rzepa and Taylor combined for a block to pull the Vikings within 8-9, and Rzepa added a kill from Domdei Goedert to tie the set at 9-12.
Davis scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 10-13, and Winters added a kill from Rzepa to tie the set at 13-13. Graceland called timeout, and the teams traded points. Winters delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to tie the set at 14-14.
Leandro and Sou combined for a block to give Grand View a 15-16 lead, and Sou scored from Taylor to tie the set at 16-16. Leandro blocked an attack to give the Vikings a 17-16 advantage, and Davis scored from Valencia to make it 19-18.
Davis connected on a kill from Domdei Goedert to give Grand View a 20-19 lead, and Leandro delivered back-to-back kills from Domdei Goedert to extend the advantage to 22-19. Graceland called timeout, and Leandro added another kill to make it 23-20.
Rzepa contributed to give the Vikings match point at 24-22, and Sou closed out the match with a block, securing a 25-23 third set victory and the sweep.
The Vikings put together a dominant performance in their home conference match, sweeping Graceland to claim their fifth victory of the season.
