DES MOINES, IOWA – The Grand View women's basketball team defeated Baker 78-65 on Saturday afternoon, improving to 16-7 overall and 13-2 in conference play behind a stellar performance from Anna Gossling.
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead in the opening quarter. Gossling hit a three-pointer assisted by Eva Solseth, and Taryn Ottemann added a pair of baskets to give Grand View an 8-4 advantage. Gossling caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking down two more three-pointers to help the Vikings build a 17-14 lead after one quarter.
Grand View extended their advantage in the second quarter as Amaya Davison went to work at the free-throw line. The senior guard converted six free throws in the period, while Gossling added another three-pointer to push the lead to 26-21. Ellie Knock and Claire Galbraith chipped in buckets as the Vikings took a 38-31 lead into halftime.
Baker made things interesting in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to four points early. But Grand View responded through Gossling and Davison. Gossling knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead back to six, and Davison's free throw gave the Vikings a 53-46 cushion heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter belonged to Gossling. The sharp-shooting guard scored or assisted on multiple baskets, including a three-pointer that pushed the lead to 62-46. Davison continued her work at the charity stripe, and Abigail Jones added a timely three-pointer to help Grand View maintain a double-digit advantage. The Vikings controlled the final minutes to secure the 78-65 victory.
