DES MOINES, IOWA – The Grand View women's basketball team defeated Clarke 73-63 on Wednesday evening, using a strong first-half performance to improve to 15-7 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
Grand View controlled the opening quarter. Anna Gossling scored assisted by Eva Solseth to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead, and Solseth hit a three-pointer assisted by Claire Galbraith to extend it to 5-0. Clarke cut the deficit to 5-2, but Amaya Davison hit a free throw to make it 6-2. Ellie Knock added two free throws to push the lead to 8-2. Clarke scored to make it 8-4, and Taryn Ottemann converted two free throws to extend the Vikings' advantage to 10-4. Galbraith scored assisted by Davison to make it 12-6, and Davison hit a three-pointer assisted by Galbraith to push the lead to 15-6. Clarke cut it to 15-9, but Ottemann added a layup to give Grand View a 17-9 lead. Lily Smith scored to extend it to 19-9, and Galbraith added a layup to give the Vikings a 21-19 advantage after Clarke went on a run to close the quarter.
The second quarter saw Grand View extend their lead. After a back-and-forth battle, Ellie Knock added a layup to regain the lead at 28-27. Kock followed the basket up with a three-pointer assisted by Ottemann to give Grand View a 31-27 lead. Solseth knocked down another three-pointer assisted by Jones to extend it to 34-29. Ottemann scored and added a free throw to push the advantage to 37-29. Ottemann added another layup and free throw to give the Vikings a commanding 40-29 halftime lead.
Clarke made a run in the third quarter. Smith scored assisted by Galbraith to give Grand View a 42-31 lead, but the Pride fought back. Ottemann scored and added a free throw to extend the Vikings' lead to 45-33, and Davison hit a free throw to make it 46-33. Davison added a layup to push it to 49-41, and Knock hit a free throw to extend the lead to 50-41. Ottemann knocked down a three-pointer assisted by Jones to make it 53-43, and Davison converted a free throw to push the advantage to 54-43. Ottemann scored to give Grand View a 56-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Ottemann scored to extend the lead to 58-46. Knock added a layup to make it 60-48, and Ottemann hit a free throw to push it to 61-48. Ottemann knocked down a three-pointer assisted by Solseth to extend the Vikings' advantage to 64-50. Davison scored and added a free throw to make it 67-53, and Solseth added a jumper to push the lead to 69-53. Jones scored assisted by Davison to give Grand View their largest lead at 71-57. Ottemann converted two free throws to extend it to 73-59 as the Vikings held on for the 73-63 victory.
