Thrilling Comeback: Grand View Men's Soccer Wins 5-4 in a Dramatic Match

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – In an exciting and hard-fought contest, Grand View Men's Soccer hosted by Mount Mercy, battled to a dramatic 5-4 victory. The Vikings showcased resilience and offensive firepower, overcoming an early deficit to secure the win in a game filled with intensity, discipline, and competitive spirit. 

The match opened with both teams eager to establish control. Grand View struck first in the 2nd minute when Tim Schoorlemmer scored the opening goal, assisted by Herman Furumo, giving the Vikings an early lead. Mount Mercy responded swiftly, equalizing in the 3rd minute through Pablo Ortega Herreros. The visitors then took command, scoring three more goals between the 5th and 7th minutes, with Ortega Herreros completing his hat trick and giving Mount Mercy a 3-1 lead. 

Undeterred, Grand View fought back and pulled within one in the 8th minute when Justin Figaroa scored off an assist from Ignacio Gonzalez. The first half saw continued back-and-forth action, culminating in Mount Mercy extending their lead to 4-2 with a goal from Tomas Parra Reyna in the 28th minute. However, the Vikings responded just before halftime when Gonzalez scored a penalty kick in the 37th minute, narrowing the gap to 4-3. 

Soon after, the Vikings tied it all up at 4, with a Kevin Ventura goal, assisted by Daniel Sandoval. This was the eighth goal of the game, all before the second half. 

The lone goal in the second half came from Grand View, as Gonzalez scored his second penalty kick in the 72nd minute, putting the Vikings ahead 5-4. Despite mounting efforts from Mount Mercy, the Vikings' defense held firm in the final minutes, preserving their narrow advantage and securing the thrilling victory.
