HENDERSON, TENNESSEE – The Grand View women's basketball team fell to #7 Freed-Hardeman 71-45 on Monday afternoon at Brewer Sports Center. The Vikings competed hard against the seventh-ranked team in the country but the Lions used a dominant second half to pull away.
Grand View started strong in the first quarter, keeping pace with the seventh-ranked Lions. Ellie Knock opened the scoring with a jumper to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Freed-Hardeman answered to take a 7-2 advantage, but the Vikings fought back. Lily Smith knocked down a three-pointer assisted by Anna Gossling to cut it to 11-6, and Taryn Ottemann hit back-to-back three-pointers assisted by Gossling and Smith to tie the game at 12-12. Eva Solseth made one of two free throws to give Grand View a 13-12 lead, and added another free throw on the last possession to give the Vikings a 14-13 edge heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams struggle offensively as the Vikings managed just 9 points. Taryn Ottemann provided a spark off the bench with two three-pointers, while Gossling added a jumper to keep Grand View close. However, Freed-Hardeman extended their lead to 30-22 at halftime behind balanced scoring.
Freed-Hardeman took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 20-15. Grand View battled back with Gossling leading the charge, scoring 6 points in the quarter. Amaya Davison and Lily Smith each knocked down baskets to try to slow the Lions' momentum, but Freed-Hardeman shot 53.3% from the field in the quarter to build a 50-37 lead heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Lions as they pulled away for good. Freed-Hardeman's defense clamped down, holding Grand View to just 3 field goals in the final period while scoring 21 points of their own. Ottemann hit her third three-pointer of the game and Davison added a free throw, but the Vikings couldn't find enough offense to mount a comeback. Freed-Hardeman's depth and efficiency proved too much as they closed out the 71-45 victory.
GAME NOTES:
- Anna Gossling led the Vikings with 10 points on 2 of 11 shooting and added 4 rebounds.
- Taryn Ottemann came off the bench to score 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting, including 2-of-5 from three-point range, and pulled down 8 rebounds.
- Claire Galbraith contributed 5 points and 8 rebounds, while Lily Smith added 5 points and 2 rebounds.
- Amaya Davison chipped in 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists, and Ellie Knock added 2 points and 2 rebounds.
- Grand View shot 28.3% from the field and 27.3% from three-point range, while Freed-Hardeman shot 45.2% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc.
- The Lady Lions outrebounded the Vikings 39-34 and scored 34 points in the paint compared to Grand View's 10.
