Grand View falls to #1 Bethel (Tenn.)

MCKENZIE, TENNESSEE – The Grand View women's basketball team fell to Bethel (TN) 70-58 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference road matchup. The Vikings battled throughout but couldn't overcome a strong second-half performance by the Wildcats.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading leads early. Bethel opened with a jumper to take a 2-0 lead, but Anna Gossling quickly answered with a three-pointer to give Grand View a 3-2 advantage. The Wildcats responded with a three-pointer to go back ahead 5-3. Eva Solseth added a layup to tie it at 5-5, but Bethel scored again to make it 7-5. Gossling knocked down another three-pointer assisted by Amaya Davison, to put the Vikings back on top 8-7. Solseth converted two free throws to extend the lead to 10-9, and Claire Galbraith hit a three-pointer assisted by Davison to give Grand View their largest lead at 13-11 with 2:33 remaining in the quarter. However, the Wildcats scored a layup in the final seconds to tie the game at 13-13 after one quarter.

The second quarter saw Bethel take control with balanced scoring. Grand View fought to stay close behind Gossling's continued strong play, as she added another three-pointer, and Eva Solseth chipped in baskets to keep the Vikings within striking distance. However, the Wildcats outscored Grand View 20-13 in the quarter to take a 33-26 halftime lead.

Bethel extended their advantage in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 19-15. Gossling remained the offensive spark for Grand View, adding two more three-pointers in the quarter. Solseth and Amaya Davison contributed baskets to try to slow the Wildcats' momentum, but Bethel's efficient shooting allowed them to build their largest lead of the game at 17 points and take a 52-41 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Grand View mount a late push, outscoring Bethel 17-18 in the final period. Davison came alive with key baskets and free throws, while Galbraith and Solseth added buckets to try to chip away at the deficit. Taryn Ottemann provided a spark off the bench with five points in the quarter, but the Vikings couldn't complete the comeback as Bethel closed out the 70-58 victory.

GAME NOTES:

  • Anna Gossling led the Vikings with 21 points on 8 of 16 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, and added 6 rebounds.
  • Eva Solseth contributed 12 points on 4 of 11 shooting and pulled down 2 rebounds.
  • Amaya Davison added 11 points on 3 of 10 shooting and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line, along with 4 rebounds.
  • Claire Galbraith chipped in 7 points and 6 rebounds, while Taryn Ottemann added 5 points off the bench.
  • Grand View shot 33.9% from the field and 31.0% from three-point range, while Bethel shot 41.7% from the field and made all 15 free throw attempts.
