DES MOINES, IOWA – The Grand View women's basketball team defeated MidAmerica Nazarene 69-66 in overtime on Saturday night, snapping the Pioneers' 37-game Heart of America Conference winning streak in a hard-fought victory at home.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-0 lead before
Anna Gossling got the Vikings on the board with two free throws. MidAmerica Nazarene extended the lead to 10-4, but Grand View battled back.
Lily Smith knocked down a three-pointer assisted by Gossling to make it 10-7, and
Taryn Ottemann added a layup to cut it to 10-9.
Eva Solseth hit a three-pointer assisted by Ottemann to give the Vikings their first lead at 12-10.
Amaya Davison scored a layup assisted by Gossling in the final seconds to tie the game at 14-14 after one quarter.
The second quarter remained tight as both teams traded baskets. Gossling kept the Vikings in the game with a jumper and a three-pointer, and
Claire Galbraith hit a three-pointer assisted by Smith to give Grand View a 24-20 lead. The Pioneers answered to tie it at 24-24 and eventually took a 27-24 advantage. Gossling scored back-to-back layups to give the Vikings a 28-27 lead, but MidAmerica Nazarene hit a three-pointer to take a 30-28 halftime lead.
Grand View took control in the third quarter. Davison hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 32-31, then scored a layup and free throw to give the Vikings a 34-32 lead. Davison continued her hot shooting with another three-pointer assisted by
Ellie Knock to extend it to 37-35. Solseth scored a layup assisted by Davison, and Knock added another to push the advantage to 41-35. The Pioneers fought back to tie the game, and the quarter ended knotted at 44-44.
The fourth quarter saw the Vikings battle for the lead. Galbraith converted two free throws and added a jumper to give Grand View a 48-46 advantage. Gossling and Davison kept the Vikings ahead, and Gossling hit a three-pointer assisted by Knock to extend the lead to 61-56. The Pioneers rallied late to tie the game at 61-61 and took a 64-61 lead. Galbraith delivered a clutch three-pointer assisted by Davison to tie the game at 64-64 with under a minute remaining, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Solseth tied the game at 66-66 with a layup. After turnovers on both ends, Gossling knocked down a crucial three-pointer to give Grand View a 69-66 lead. The Vikings' defense held strong in the final two minutes, forcing turnovers and securing defensive rebounds to seal the victory and end MidAmerica Nazarene's impressive conference winning streak.
