DES MOINES, IOWA—On Saturday night, Park University made the journey from Missouri to Cownie Soccer Complex to face Men's Soccer. Both teams came into this match with three-season wins, but Park stole the win late on, with a final score of 1-0 to the Pirates.
Grand View started this game the brightest, with
Paulo Marques and
Matheus Martins Silva having early efforts at goal in the first half. The majority of the first half was a stalemate, with both defenses canceling out the threat of wide men on each team. The action of the half was provided by English defender
Charlie Wells,
who made up for his error with a strong defensive block on the line to deny the Pirates from going into the half with the lead.
In the 2
nd half, the Vikings were much more effective in attack. However, the Pirates goalkeeper would be on hand to keep out a shot from
Marco Baioni, which gave Park their momentum boost to attack, striking the post in the 58
th minute. As the Vikings began to commit bodies forward, Park could strike on the counter. In the 85
th minute, the Pirates would score a header following a set-piece, which would end up being an agonizingly late winner for Park University.
