DES MOINES, IOWA – 9th-ranked Grand View University men's volleyball hosted the University of Health Science and Pharmacy for a Friday evening contest that would kick off a home stand. The Vikings made early work of the Eutectics, defeating them in three straight sets. The set scores were 25-17, 25-23, and 29-27.
After a quick start by the Vikings, the Eutectics began to settle in, and by the 7th point, we were all knotted up. Back-to-back kills from
Leonardo Annichini and
Daniel Galili would give the Vikings a comfortable 14-9 lead. Three straight side-outs from UHSP would grow the Vikings' lead as they were eyeing their first-set victory. The set would be secured after a swing from Annichini, who would be the Vikings leading attacker of the evening with 16 kills.
UHSP came to play in the second set, jumping out to a 4-nothing lead. Annichini would once again get the scoring going for the Vikings starting their rally. A 3-0 run by the Vikings was highlighted by a kill-a-piece from Annichini, Galili, and Isaiah Kalima Izumi, stealing the momentum from the Eutectics. The Vikings would rally from behind to take a second set from UHSP in Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center, 25-23.
Grand View would take an early lead in the final set; the Eutectics would show no sign of defeat; however, they lingered closely behind the Vikings throughout the third set. After a few Vikings errors, the two would be knotted at 19s. The teams would give the crowd extra serves as they raced past the 25 mark. GVU would outlast UHSP as they took the final set for the clean sweep, 29-27.
