DES MOINES, IOWA – 9th-ranked Grand View University men's volleyball hosted the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University this past Saturday, March 2
nd. The Vikings capped off an impressive week after fending off the Spartans in five sets. Scores were 25-20, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, and 15-9.
A neck-and-neck start would indicate a good match ahead between the two teams. Grand View would extend its lead once it hits its 20
th point, halting MBU. A trio of errors from the Spartans, followed by a kill from Bayron Valdez Pena to take set one 25-20.
The Vikings led early in the second set after back-to-back kills from Valdez and
Ryan Griffel. Another pair of Vikings kills Valdez, and
Leonardo Annichini would give Grand View an 11-7 lead.
Daniel Galili would grab a kill of his own to lead 23-19. After another side out from the Spartans, the Vikings took set two, 25-20.
The Spartans took an early lead in the third set, maintaining their lead throughout, taking the second set, 25-18.
After taking a third set the Spartans would hold momentum rolling into things. The Vikings knotted things at 20. A kill from Bayron Valdez wouldn't be enough for GVU to climb back into the third set, as Missouri Baptist would force a fifth.
The fifth set would be a thriller. As the two teams battled things out, Grand View would edge the Spartans late as they climbed to a 13-8 lead. Two Valdez Pena and Galili kills would fend off the Spartans, 15-9. With the win the Vikings move to 6-0 in the Heart, tying for 1
st in the Heart.
