Vikings Fend Off the Spartans in Five, Moving to 6-0 in the Heart

DES MOINES, IOWA – 9th-ranked Grand View University men's volleyball hosted the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University this past Saturday, March 2nd. The Vikings capped off an impressive week after fending off the Spartans in five sets. Scores were 25-20, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, and 15-9.

A neck-and-neck start would indicate a good match ahead between the two teams. Grand View would extend its lead once it hits its 20th point, halting MBU. A trio of errors from the Spartans, followed by a kill from Bayron Valdez Pena to take set one 25-20.

The Vikings led early in the second set after back-to-back kills from Valdez and Ryan Griffel. Another pair of Vikings kills Valdez, and Leonardo Annichini would give Grand View an 11-7 lead. Daniel Galili would grab a kill of his own to lead 23-19. After another side out from the Spartans, the Vikings took set two, 25-20.

The Spartans took an early lead in the third set, maintaining their lead throughout, taking the second set, 25-18.

After taking a third set the Spartans would hold momentum rolling into things. The Vikings knotted things at 20. A kill from Bayron Valdez wouldn't be enough for GVU to climb back into the third set, as Missouri Baptist would force a fifth.

The fifth set would be a thriller. As the two teams battled things out, Grand View would edge the Spartans late as they climbed to a 13-8 lead. Two Valdez Pena and Galili kills would fend off the Spartans, 15-9. With the win the Vikings move to 6-0 in the Heart, tying for 1st in the Heart.
