DES MOINES, IOWA - The 5th-ranked Vikings took the court in the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center for the first time this season. The Vikings opened up play in Des Moines with a well-deserved sweep over the 11th-ranked Georgetown Tigers by scores of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-23.
With the win, first-year head men's volleyball coach Raphael Lima Seabra earned his first head coaching win in the Johnson Wellness Center.
It came as no surprise that the first set would be a back-and-forth affair. The Tigers were able to hold the lead a majority of the first set, but it didn't take long for the Vikings to find rhythm on offense as they found themselves at set point, and
Daniel Galili's ace sealed the 25-19 first frame victory, for the Vikings.
Daniel Galili was also on fire in the first period, as he finished with a team of six kills.
Georgetown took an early lead in the second set, but the Vikings kept up with them and managed to tie the set at 19-19 with a double block from
Daniel Wong and
Rafael Obrusnik. After exchanging points, both teams had a chance to win the set, but it was the Vikings who sealed it with two consecutive aces from Bayron Valdez Pena.
Grand View had to rally in the third set to complete the sweep; the two ranked teams were battling it out all match and would see themselves eye-to-eye at 23 all before the Vikings finished with a 3-0 run highlighted by two kills from
Leonardo Annichini, and a block from Galili and Wong to close out the Tigers.
For the match, Galili led all players with 13 kills while hitting .310 from the floor off 29 swings. Another Viking to reach double-figure kills was Valdez, as he ended the night with 10. As a team, Grand View's best offensive set was the final frame, as GVU tallied a .364 hitting percentage with 19 kills and 33 attacks.
