DES MOINES, IOWA – On Tuesday night, Grand View Men's Soccer faced Graceland Yellowjackets in a must-win game for both sides in the hunt for conference tournament places. In another goal-filled contest, Vikings triumphed 3-2 on the night.
Both sides went into this contest knowing that it was a vital fixture to win if they were to make it into the top 8 and qualify for the conference tournament. As a result, the first half was a tense, cagey affair with neither team wanting to expose themselves to going behind early on. It took 30 minutes for the first clear-cut chance to occur, with the Graceland forward dispossessing the Vikings' defender and making no mistake in front of goal, making it 1-0 to the Yellowjackets. This encouraged Grand View to make some changes, and the introduction of
Samuel Londono lead to a brilliant through-ball from the Colombian senior to find
Pietro Piacenza who rounded the keeper and made it 1-1 in the 39th minute. At half-time, the score was level at 1-1.
As the second half started, the Vikings clearly continued their momentum and dominated early proceedings. In the 53
rd minute,
Joshua Grosser made a powerful run down the left and cut the ball back for
Piacenza to grab his 2
nd goal of the game, giving Grand View a 2-1 lead. The Vikings continued to attack, with flowing moves creating chances for
Warren Sung and
Piacenza, however neither could extend their lead. Grand View would rue these missed chances, as Graceland got the equalizer in the 66
th minute off a set-piece. The Yellowjackets goalkeeper was on top form to keep out the Vikings and keep his side level, however he could not stop
Clement Scaccia from close-range after another barnstorming run from
Grosser in the 83
rd minute. Grand View saw the last few minutes out, and once again, would win 3-2 at Cownie Soccer Complex.
