Baldwin City, KS – For the last away trip of the season, Men's Soccer traveled to play Baker University, another contender for the remaining conference tournament spots. Baker overpowered the Vikings on the night, with the game ending 4-0.
At this stage of the season, the Heart of America Conference is one of the country's best and most competitive conferences. Heading into this penultimate fixture, Grand View was one of 11 teams still fighting for the eight conference tournament spots, and a win against similarly-placed Baker would see the Vikings climb the table. Baker started the game brighter, and it only took them 6 minutes to score following a midfielder's advancing run. Grand View struggled to grasp this game, and it got worse when Baker added a 2
nd goal in the 12
th minute from a corner that was swept in from close range. In the first half, the Vikings struggled to create chances and possess the ball as the energy of the Baker midfield continued to control the game. Grand View would only complete one shot, and the score would be 2-0 at the break.
The second half was all too similar for the Vikings, as Baker asserted themselves early on and managed to find the back of the net for the third time, as another set piece proved to be Grand View's kryptonite in the 51
st minute. With the score at 3-0, the Vikings improved by connecting passes in the final third
, with
Warren Sung having their best chance of the game, hitting the side-netting following a
Kai McPeak pass. Ultimately, this game petered out as Baker prevented the Vikings from creating significant chances. In the 84
th minute, Baker would add to their goal tally from another set-piece, and the game would end 4-0. Grand View will now need to rely on other teams for results to go in their favor to make the top 8.
