Box Score OSKALOOSA, IOWA - The Grand View Vikings women's soccer team faced the Statesmen of William Penn University (IA) in a closely contested conference match-up on Tuesday, ultimately falling 2-1. The Vikings started strong, with Olivia Boyle and Giulia Lucarelli both taking shots on goal within the first six minutes of play. William Penn began to find their footing later in the half, but Vikings goalie Maya Fitz made four crucial saves, keeping the match level at halftime.
Although Grand View showed stellar defense and goalie play up to this point, holding off 11 shots on goal in the first half, the Statesmen finally broke the ceiling in the 60th minute. Emma Brandt found her first goal of the season, coming from a corner kick by Luca Szucs. William Penn capitalizes again shortly after, finding another goal in the 63rd minute by Lily Cote and Szucs with her second assist of the contest. The Vikings were quickly put into a position that has them needing a couple goals in a timely manner. Â
After getting some rest, Olivia Boyle comes back into the game in the 77th minute and finds the Vikings first goal of the contest shortly after! Boyle takes advantage of her Penalty Kick (PK) opportunity in the 83rd minute, cutting the lead to one, but with little time remaining for the squad. The Vikings Anna Vander Waal and Boyle fired off shots in the closing stages but didn't find the equalizer. Â
