DES MOINES, Iowa — Grand View women's basketball opened up a fresh season under second-year head coach Jasmine Stohr in Sisam Arena this afternoon. The Vikings waved a balanced attack that led them to a victory over Tabor College, 82-54.
Grand View winning the tip out of the gate would open the contest with a lay-up from Rachel Leerar to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Tabor would take a slight lead five minutes into the game until Ella Larsen rattled in a three from teammate Ellie Rengstorf to slide Grand View back in front, 12-10. The Vikings would begin to gap themselves with their lead from the Bluejays toward the end of the 1st quarter as Anna Gossling and Larsen hit back-to-back jumpers to push the lead to 23-16.
Grand View would lead by as much as 11 points by just under the 6-minute mark. Malarie Ross would connect on two free throws to give the Vikings a 13-point advantage. Gossling would finish off the first half of play with a jumper and Grand View would go to the locker room with a comfortable first-half-of-play lead over Tabor, 43-29.
Both teams would return to the second half going scoreless for a minute, Grand View would end the minute-long drought with a bucket from transfer Cleao Murray. Murray would get hot through the opening minutes of the 3rd quarter, rattling off seven straight points and pushing Grand View's lead out to 23 points. The Vikings would receive a last-second lay-in from Ross to send them into the final quarter up 68-40.
Vikings point-guard Ellie Rengstorf would sink a corner three off of a slick bounce pass from Lauren Conrey; the Bluejays would then trail by 31 with only four minutes remaining. The Vikings would cruise this one out to open their season big with an 82-54 win over Tabor College.
Grand View returns to the court for their second home contest this coming Tuesday, November 7th, this one being against the Mustangs of Morningside University (2-0). The game will tip at 5:30 PM with a men's contest to follow.
