DES MOINES, Iowa — Grand View women's basketball kept the wins coming in Sisam Arena as they topped the Morningside Mustangs this evening. The Vikings, after trailing at the halfway point, cruised to a 72-58 victory over the Mustangs to move to 2-0.
Grand View would score off the bat with a layup from Ellie Rengstorf after Ella Larsen secured the tip for the Vikings. Morningside would immediately find the equalizer on the following possession. After trading baskets, Morningside would begin to build their lead and edge the Vikings 13-6 after a three from Mustang Lauren Hedlund. Grand View would pull themselves back within four points in the opening quarter as Katie Fogarty found a last-second shot to close the first quarter, making the score 16-12.
The Vikings would struggle to get things going offensively to open the second quarter, finding themselves in a hole with the Mustangs. Still, Grand View's defense would keep them within five points until a small offensive run led by a three from Brianna Fields would cut the deficit to two. The Mustangs themselves would struggle to score, allowing the Vikings to chip their way back into the contest; a second three-pointer by fields would bring Grand View back within one point. The first half would be closed out with a last-second lay-up for the Mustangs to carry over their one-point lead to the second half of play as they led 35-34.
Anna Gossling would set the tempo for the Vikings in the third quarter as she corralled six points to open the fresh 10. After three minutes of play, the Vikings would find themselves with the largest lead of the contest thus far at six points. The Vikings would hit their first double-digit lead after Rachel Leerar sank a pair of free throws with under a minute to play in the third quarter.
Morningside would lower the Vikings' lead to 6 points in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings' ability to get stops and score would outlast the Mustangs. A five-point swing from Ella Larsen would solidify things for the Vikings as they closed out win number two in Sisam Arena 72-58.
Grand View returns to the court for their first road test of the season. The Vikings will travel to Hastings, NE this coming Friday to take on their second GPAC member of the season thus far. The game will tip off at 5:00 p.m.
