DES MOINES, IOWA – The Grand View Women's Soccer team opened its home slate with a 2-0 victory over the Doane College Tigers, in a match defined by Grand View's control of possession, a relentless attacking effort, and a defense that limited Doane to just one shot on target all night. The Vikings set the tone early and never let go, out-shooting Doane 16-4 over the full 90 minutes.
Grand View pressed from the opening whistle, forcing an early save out of Doane goalkeeper Virginia Johnson and piling up 12 shots in the first half alone. Doane's best chance of the match came against the run of play in the seventh minute, when the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick, but Grand View's defense held firm behind
Maya Fritz, who finished the night having made just the one save.
The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when
Riley Pryor scored her first goal of the season, giving Grand View a 1-0 lead. The goal capped a string of sustained Grand View pressure as Pryor had already tested Johnson four times before finding the back of the net. The Vikings carried the lead, and the balance of play, into the break.
Doane pushed for an equalizer to open the second half, but found little room to work with as Grand View continued to control possession and limit clean looks at goal. The Vikings kept the pressure on in search of a second goal, and it arrived in the 88th minute when
Dakota Enikova buried her first goal of the season to make it 2-0 and put the result out of reach.
