DES MOINES, IOWA – The Vikings hosted Clarke University on Monday evening for a conference matchup. Grand View dominated from start to finish, sweeping the Crusaders 25-13, 25-15, 25-11. The Vikings improved to 8-5 overall and 7-4 in Heart of America Conference play.
The opening set saw Grand View establish complete control early. Jonathan Rzepa opened with back-to-back kills from Guilherme Domdei Goedert, and Chris Davis and Rzepa combined for consecutive blocks to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead. Rzepa added another kill from Domdei Goedert to extend the lead to 6-0.
Davis delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 7-1, and Rzepa contributed to push the advantage to 9-3. Andre Lucas Alves Leandro scored from Bernardo Luis Marostica to make it 11-5, and Davis and Sou combined for a block to extend the lead to 12-5.
Winters added a kill from Domdei Goedert, and Sou scored from Marostica to give Grand View a 14-6 lead. Leandro and Rzepa combined for a block to make it 16-8, and Rzepa delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to extend the advantage to 17-9.
Davis contributed, and Winters added a kill from Domdei Goedert to push the lead to 19-9. Leandro scored from Domdei Goedert, and Davis went on a dominant serving run with three consecutive service aces to extend Grand View's lead to 23-9. Clarke called timeout, but Leandro closed out the opening set with a kill from Domdei Goedert, securing a 25-13 victory.
The second set saw the Vikings continue their momentum. Domdei Goedert orchestrated the offense as Rzepa blocked an attack to open the scoring. Grand View jumped out to a 2-0 lead, and Leandro delivered three consecutive kills to extend the advantage to 5-2. Davis added a service ace to make it 6-2.
Leandro scored from Sam Sheets to give the Vikings a 9-7 lead, and Leandro added another kill from Marostica to make it 10-8. Rzepa connected on a kill from Sou to extend the lead to 11-9, and Leandro scored from Marostica to make it 12-9.
Davis delivered a kill from Domdei Goedert to give Grand View a 13-10 lead, and Leandro added one from Domdei Goedert to extend the advantage to 14-11. Winters contributed, and Sou went on an impressive run with a service ace and multiple points to push the lead to 20-14.
Clarke called timeout, and Sou continued to dominate with kills and service aces. Leandro scored from Marostica to make it 23-14, and Sou recorded another service ace to give the Vikings set point at 24-14. Marostica closed out the second set with a kill, securing a 25-15 victory.
The third set saw Grand View look to complete the sweep. Marostica opened the scoring, and Rzepa added a kill from Marostica to make it 2-1. Winters scored from Marostica to tie the set at 3-3, and Winters and Sou combined for a block to give the Vikings a 4-3 lead.
Sou delivered a kill from Marostica to make it 5-4, and Leandro recorded a service ace to extend the lead to 6-4. Marostica and Sou combined for a block, and Winters added a kill from Marostica to push the advantage to 8-4.
Pietro Fadanelli contributed from Marostica to give Grand View a 10-6 lead, and Leandro and Fadanelli connected on kills to extend the advantage to 13-8. Rzepa added a kill from Marostica, and Fadanelli scored to make it 16-10.
Rzepa contributed to push the lead to 17-10, and Clarke called timeout. Rzepa recorded a service ace to make it 18-10, and Sou delivered a kill from Marostica to extend the advantage to 19-11. Winters scored from Fadanelli, and Marostica and Sou combined for a block to give Grand View a 22-11 lead.
Fadanelli added a kill from Marostica to make it 23-11, and Sou blocked an attack to give the Vikings match point at 24-11. Leandro closed out the match with a kill from Marostica, securing a 25-11 third set victory and the sweep.
The Vikings put together a dominant performance, sweeping Clarke to claim their eighth victory of the season.
