MVB Takes Down Clarke to Start Conference Play

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The Vikings traveled to Clarke University on Tuesday evening for their first conference match of the 2026 season. Grand View dominated from start to finish, sweeping the Pride 25-18, 25-21, 25-19. The Vikings improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Heart of America Conference play.

The first set saw Grand View establish control early. Cheikh Sou and Andre Lucas Alves Leandro combined for a block to open the scoring, and Sou added a kill from Guilherme Domdei Goedert to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead. Chris Davis contributed a kill to extend the advantage to 4-2.

Leandro scored on a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 5-4, and Jonathan Rzepa delivered back-to-back kills to push Grand View's lead to 7-4. Winters added a kill from Domdei Goedert, and Leandro connected on three consecutive kills to give the Vikings a commanding 12-7 advantage.

Leandro continued his offensive surge with another kill from Domdei Goedert, and Davis added one to make it 17-12. Winters scored from Domdei Goedert and then from Leandro as Grand View extended the lead to 19-12. After a timeout, Winters delivered another kill to make it 21-16, and Davis closed out the opening set with a kill, giving the Vikings a 25-18 victory.

The second set started with Winters recording a kill and a service ace to help Grand View jump out to a 3-0 lead. Davis added a kill from Domdei Goedert, and the Vikings led 6-4 early in the frame.

Davis came through with a service ace to extend the lead to 8-6, and Winters connected on a kill from Domdei Goedert to make it 9-7. Leandro scored to pull Grand View ahead 10-8, and Sou contributed to give the Vikings a 12-9 advantage.

Domdei Goedert orchestrated the offense as Davis added a kill from Sam Sheets to make it 15-11. Leandro delivered a kill to extend the lead to 17-12, and Winters scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 18-13.

Grand View called timeout as the lead was cut to 18-17, looking to regroup. Leandro came through with a crucial kill to break the tie at 21-20. After regaining the serve, Leandro scored from Sheets to make it 23-21, and then finished the job with another kill to end the set 25-21.

Opening the third set, Sou scored from Marcus Taylor to give Grand View an early 1-0 lead. Leandro added a kill to make it 2-1, and Sou connected on another to extend the advantage to 3-2.

Pietro Fadanelli contributed a kill, and Sou added another to give the Vikings a 6-5 lead. Leandro and Sou continued to produce offensively as Grand View built momentum. Fadanelli scored from Domdei Goedert to make it 10-9, and Leandro added kills to push the lead to 12-11.

Winters delivered kills to give Grand View a 14-12 advantage, and then recorded a service ace to make it 17-15. Leandro connected on a kill from Domdei Goedert to extend the lead to 19-17, and Domdei Goedert helped set up Rzepa for a block to make it 21-18.

Leandro added another kill to pull ahead 22-19, and then closed out the match with a final kill from Domdei Goedert, securing a 25-19 third set victory and the conference sweep.

The Vikings displayed a complete team performance in their conference opener. Grand View's balanced attack and strong serving proved too much for the Pride as the Vikings claimed their second victory of the season.
