DUBUQUE, IA: Grand View answered an early deficit before halftime and held firm through a physical second half, settling for a 1-1 draw with Clarke on Wednesday at Burrows Field. The result moves Grand View to 6-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while Clarke moves to 6-1-4 overall and 2-1-4 in league action.
Clarke struck first in the 20th minute, taking a 1-0 lead after a stretch of play that saw several fouls and cards on both sides. Grand View responded with a trio of substitutions right after the goal, bringing in Pau Gonzalez, Saneyuki Yamagata and Anthony Ulloa, and the Vikings began to build pressure. Yamagata had a shot blocked in the 38th minute, and Grand View leveled the match just before the break. Pau Gonzalez set up Herman Furumo, who finished in the 42nd minute to make it 1-1. Luis Helm and the Grand View defense kept Clarke from adding to its total, and the teams went to halftime tied.
The second half was a hard-fought, physical affair. Clarke had several looks, including a few shots that sailed wide or high, but Grand View's defense limited the Pride's best chances. Helm made a save on a Clarke header in the 77th minute, and the Vikings pushed for a go-ahead goal late, earning back-to-back corner kicks from Furumo and Gonzalez in the 84th minute. Clarke picked up a number of yellow cards as the match grew chippy, and Grand View was issued cards of its own late, but neither side could find a winner, and the match ended 1-1.
