GV Prevails in Five Sets

PERU, NEBRASKA – Grand View traveled to Peru State College for a weekday matchup. The Vikings, coming off impressive wins, faced a hungry team in PSC. Grand View was pushed to five, after four closely contested sets. GVU eliminated the doubt in the final, winning 15-7 and improving their record to 17-1 on the season. 

SET 1 

Grand View was down 4-8 early and went on a huge run behind Vitoria Campos Mello serving. Mariana de Carvalho, Mya Clapp, and Jocelyn Barrett found kills on sets by Juliana Neves and Maiah Kalima-Izumi. The Vikings went from down 4, to a 13-8 advantage. The Bobcats kept creeping back into it with their own runs and a late run put them tied at 24. Lindsey Hrbek and Campos Mello finished attacks to get to this point. Barrett pushed the Vikings to 25, but Peru tied things back up again. Then Carvalho slammed a kill from Aydia Mayotte. An error from the Bobcats pushed the Vikings to a 27-25 win in set one. 

SET 2  

 The next set started with Campos Mello delivering a kill and Mya Clapp earned a kill early in the set. Kalima found an ace in the early part of the set as well, but then the Bobcats got out to a lead. Grand View kept pushing back and Carvalho got hot with four kills in the middle of the set. GV gained a 14-13 advantage before more back and forth. The Vikings were in position to win again with an 18-15 lead on another swing from Campos Mello, but Peru finished the set well again, and this time stole a set 20-25.  

SET 3 

GV got off to a 5-point deficit immediately in the third set. Carvalho found back-to-back kills from Neves which settled the Vikings in. Barrett got involved again, keeping her high hitting percentage into this match. GV was down 4-8 when they hit a huge run during service from Neves. Campos Mello and Carvalho delivered two kills during this frame, and the Neves found a timely ace as well. GV went up 12-8 before Peru was forced to call a timeout. The Vikings kept the lead up for a while with Brooklyn Roder and Ellie Dougherty finding their first kills of the night. The last four Grand View point's game on kills by Campos Mello, showing her clutch ability as well. GV won 25-23.  

SET 4 

Things were tight most of this set. Roder and Campos Mello found solo blocks in the early section of the set, and Carvalho connected with Neves as they have all season. Dougherty got involved again with 3 big kills and a solo block later in the set. Barrett had two more kills at the midpoint and both Neves and Campos Mello delivered aces. The Vikings fell off at the end of the set and Peru forced at final set, 22-25.  

SET 5 

Dougherty connected on back-to-back kills for the first two Grand View points in the final set. Campos Mello delivered a huge attack as well and the match was 4-4 to this point. The Vikings then shut the door. Hasty served for five straight points including an ace, and a Carvalho slam. After letting up a couple, the Vikings were up 10-6 and Carvalho deflated the Bobcats with THREE STRAIGHT ACES. The Vikings prevailed in a dominant 15-7 set five and a 3-2 match victory.
