DES MOINES, IOWA – Grand View hosted the Statesmen of William Penn last night. The Vikings pushed their win streak to 10, with a decisive three set victory. The "Red Out" was a packed midweek game at the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center.
SET 1
Grand View was slow to start, entering a deficit of 4-9 early. The Vikings started to crawl back on the smashes from Miriana de Carvalho, Jocelyn Barrett, and Ellie Dougherty. Grand View called a timeout as the score was 7-12, and it was just what they needed. Vitoria Campos Mello earned a kill coming off the timeout, and the Vikings rallied with Clarissa Hasty behind the line. Carvalho put down two more attacks before the Statesmen called their own timeout at 15-16. Barrett continued to earn kills in clutch moments as she has done all year and earned three kills in the final four GV points. Dougherty also delivered a kill nearing the end of set one, and Juliana Neves was the center piece in the middle. GV took set one 25-23.
SET 2
The Vikings took off to a better start in set two and gained a lead through a service ace from Neves and early kills from Carvalho and Campos Mello. The two connected twice in the early part of the set along with Dougherty, and an early WPU timeout came at 10-5. The Vikings' first block of the game can block assists from Barrett and Carvalho. Neves dealing assists all game, but a nice over gave herself a kill in the middle of the set. Barrett combined with Dougherty for a block that caused another Penn timeout at 19-11. GVU played well to end the set, and Neves served an ace to put the set away at 25-19.
SET 3
This set began even until Carvalho stepped behind the line to serve. Carvalho sent over two aces to add onto Dougherty and Campos Mello kills. A Statesmen timeout cam at 8-4. From there, the Vikings had a solo block and a kill from Barrett that pushed momentum forward. The set was close at 9-10 before Aydia Mayotte went on a huge run serving! Mayotte served 11 straight times for 10 Grand View points. GV had kills from Carvalho and Barrett during this run, and Maiah Kalima-Izumi leading the great defensive effort throughout the 10-point run. WPU called a timeout to slow things down, but the Viking momentum didn't concur. GVU was up 21-9 before giving up their next point. Brooklyn Roder joined the party on offense with two kills at the end of the set, and the Vikings won 25-16, completing the sweep.
