The Vikings Fend Off The Eagles in 3 Sets

FAYOTTE, MO – The Viking's weekend on the road started at Central Methodist University to take on the Eagles. This was just the second conference matchup of the season to this point, and GV took care of business. 25-11, 25-18, & 25-22 were the scores as they swept the 8-3 Eagles (RV).

SET 1

Mariana de Carvalho started the match with three huge aces to and immediately forced a CMU timeout. Off the hot start, Vitoria Campos Mello found two kills of her own along with Jocelyn Barrett and Ellie Dougherty joining the action on the offensive end. Brooklyn Roder completed 2 straight attacks in the middle of the set and forced another eagle timeout at 14-6. Great defense was shown by the Vikings throughout the set and that showed as Juliana Neves was finding the ball for nearly every set. Roder timed a block late in the set and Carvalho ended with a huge swing to secure a dominant set one win.

SET 2

This set was back and forth at the start and Carvalho found four of the first five kills for the Vikings and Neves delivered all five assists at the setter spot. Dougherty and Barrett both had a pair of kills which pushed the lead from 7-5, to 12-6 in that run. Great service work from Clarissa Hasty turned the tide of the match. Campos Mello found two kills after an Eagle timeout and Carvalho delivered an ace that put the Vikings up 18-11. Campos Mello swung on another beautiful kill and executed a block with Barrett which put the Vikings in reach of set two. Campos Mello provided the last two points with an ace and a clean strike to end the set 25-18.

SET 3

Set three wasn't all Vikings as before. Campos Mello stayed hot with a kill for the Vikings early, and an ace. The Vikings let up two aces of their own early, and a couple miscues gave CMU the lead. Dougherty and Barrett connected on attacks, but the Eagles responded well and GV used their first timeout, down 7-11. Three more for CMU had the Vikings down 7-14 but then they started clawing back. Neves served to 6 straight set points with two kills each from Carvalho and Campos Mello, and two huge blocks as Campos Mello and Roder combined for both. Carvalho found another kill before the run was over, but a 14-14 game was at hand now. Neves found Dougherty two more times, and the Vikings took the lead on a Carvalho strike, 19-18. Aydia Mayotte served two more points to go up 21-18 and a CMU timeout was called. CMU tied it up at 21 but the Vikings never gave the advantage up, delivering timely kills and another block by Roder who combined with Carvalho this time. Campos Mello found the last two points with powerful swings and a 25-22 set win. The Viking swept tough competition.
