The Vikings Sweep the Competition in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, KS – Grand View traveled south for a triangular against Haskell Indian Nations University and Mission University. The Vikings did not drop a set in the two matches and improved their record to 11-1 on the season.  

MATCH ONE 

Grand View dominated each set with scores of 25-16, 25-8, & 25-16. In the first set, it was Jocelyn Barrett who found back-to-back kills and jump started the night for GV. After a little back and forth, it was Mariana de Carvalho and Vitoria Campos Mello who shined on the attacking end. Carvalho had seven kills in set one which included a connection from Juliana Neves to end the set.  

The second set was all Vikings. GV went up early on a couple kills from Ellie Dougherty, and two straight blocks by Jocelyn Barrett! Aydia Mayotte was the Vikings server for seven straight points in the set and the Vikings never looked back in this set, winning by 17.  

The third set, Chloe McDermott got in on the fun with a couple kills. Grand View found more help from Campos Mello during this set who provided big momentum for the team. The Vikings Emily Byrd also delivered three assists late in the game and Dougherty found two more kills in the final stretch.  

MATCH NOTES 

  • Julian Neves found 36 assists 

  • GV only outscored Haskell by 35 points in three sets 

MATCH TWO 

In game two, Kalima served to start the game and found 8 straight points for the Vikings! Barrett, Campos Mello, and Carvalho all found their attacks in the early part of set one. Barrett also combined with Dougherty for a timely block halfway through the set. GV ended on another run as Mayotte served 7 consecutive points and Brooklyn Roder contributed on a big swing during the run. Grand View finished the set 25-10. 

The second set was a more competitive start to the match, as GV was up 8-7. Barrett found three kills in the first part of the game along with Lindsey Hrbek delivering a strike. Campos Mello found a kill and an ace at the top of the set as well. Grand View widened the gap when Kalima served 6 in a row and the Vikings took a 15-8 lead. Shortly followed by an ace from Neves, Grand View now had a commanding lead. More kills found by Campos Mello and Carvalho, along with a kill off the hand of Mya Clapp. GV ended the set up 25-15. 

The last set of the night matched the previous, as GV won 25-15. Just a few points into the set, Carvalho earned two straight aces that settled them in. Later, Reese Casey and Campos Mello combined for a block, then Kaylee Stalder and Jayah Kent copied that with a block of their own. Kent found two more blocks in the set, including a solo to put GV up 21-13. A persistent Viking squad closed the door early and swept the field on Tuesday in Lawrence.
