ORANGE CITY, IOWA - The Grand View women's basketball team battled through four quarters on the road but came up short against Northwestern College, falling 83-72 in a competitive contest.
The Vikings started slow, falling behind 6-1 early before finding their footing.
Claire Galbraith hit a three-pointer assisted by
Anna Gossling to cut the deficit to 6-4, and
Taryn Ottemann followed with another triple to give Grand View their first lead at 7-6.
Lily Smith provided a spark off the bench with back-to-back baskets in the paint, helping the Vikings take a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.
Northwestern's offense heated up in the second quarter as the Raiders built separation. Ottemann hit a three-pointer assisted by Smith, but Grand View struggled to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 21.4% from the field. The Vikings trailed 40-29 at halftime.
Grand View found their offensive rhythm in the third quarter, mounting an impressive comeback. Gossling knocked down a three-pointer to start the half, and Ottemann added another to cut the deficit to 42-35. The Vikings shot 52.6% from the field and 66.7% from three-point range in the quarter. Gossling added back-to-back layups, and Ottemann converted a three-point play to bring Grand View within four at 52-48. Galbraith added a fastbreak layup to cut it to 52-50, and the Vikings trailed just 58-56 heading into the fourth after a 27-point quarter.
The Vikings continued to battle in the final period. Gossling hit a three-pointer assisted by
Kori Alcorn to cut it to 65-62, and Ottemann drained another three to make it 68-66 with under four minutes remaining. Galbraith converted two free throws to bring the Vikings within two at 70-68, but Northwestern made crucial plays down the stretch. Grand View's late three-point attempts fell short as the Vikings couldn't complete the comeback, falling 83-72.
