DES MOINES, IOWA - The Grand View men's basketball team picked up their second win of the season in convincing fashion, defeating Faith Baptist 102-73 Thursday night inside the Johnson Wellness Center.
The Vikings wasted no time setting the tone.
Rodell Davis Jr. opened the game with a three-pointer on the first possession, followed by back-to-back layups from
Jaxson Young as Grand View surged ahead 9-0 within the first two minutes.
Lukas Helms added a put-back layup and later buried a three from the wing to push the Vikings' lead to 15-0 before Faith Baptist could get on the board.
Grand View's defense was just as sharp as its offense, forcing multiple early turnovers and holding the Eagles scoreless for nearly six minutes. The Vikings capitalized with transition buckets, including another three from Davis Jr. and a fastbreak finish from
Daviyon Gaston to extend the lead to 26-11 midway through the half.
Late in the half, Grand View continued to roll behind balanced scoring from Davis Jr., Young, and Gaston.
Riley Edwards capped off the strong stretch with a layup in the closing seconds, giving the Vikings a 40-22 cushion at halftime.
Grand View started the second half with a steal from
Rodell Davis Jr. that led to a fastbreak dunk by
Lukas Helms, igniting a run that pushed the Vikings' lead to 20. The Vikings' defensive intensity forced multiple turnovers early in the half, leading to easy transition points.
Jaxson Young fueled the surge with a string of buckets, including an and-one layup that extended the lead to 50-28 with just over 17 minutes remaining.
Riley Edwards and
O'Shawn Jones-Winslow provided strong minutes off the bench, while
Luke Hart and
James Ogrodnik added key scores in the paint. Grand View's offense continued to click, shooting over 60% in the second half and dominating inside with 60 points in the paint, ultimately leading to a win with a final score of 102-73.
