DES MOINES, IOWA – The Grand View men's basketball team opened their 2025-2026 season at home against Waldorf University. The Vikings fended off the Warriors, starting their season on a high note at 1-0.
Grand View came out strong, with an opening layup and a dunk sent down by No. 2
Lukas Helms. A three and another layup put the Viking up 9-0 before the Warriors were able to find a basket. Waldorf was able to narrow that nine-point lead to seven after the first ten minutes of play, where the Vikings shot 52.6% from the field and 40% from three. No. 5
Daviyon Gaston led the early 25-18, going four-for-four for nine points, followed close behind by No. 0
Jaxson Young who found three baskets and a free throw for seven points. Gaston continued his perfect shooting percentage, tacking on two more baskets. A 12-2 run put the Vikings up 15 points with four minutes to play. A late layup and free throw pushed Grand View to a lead of 18 points, closing the half 48-30.
The second half opened with both teams trading three baskets a piece, but the Vikings were able to break the pattern and take a 21-point lead after a Young layup and free throw with 13:42 to play. Both teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the game. The Vikings had more contributions from
Rodell Davis Jr. (RJ) and
Matthew Boldt finished a fast break with 7:22 to play. GV up 22. Helms finished with 10 points in the second half before his night was done, while RJ found 7 points and Young with 6. Grand View attacked the glass better in the second half, contributing to 10 second chance points. Grand View finished with 26 points off the bench as well.
