Vikings Dominate Set Five in a High Level Conference Matchup

PARKVILLE, MISSOURI – The Vikings made their way to Park University on Friday. Both teams on the upward half of the Heart conference rankings, and a great game was played out. It took five sets, but the Vikings finished the job, taking a 3-2 win over the Pirates.

The first was close the whole way through. The Vikings had aces from Vitoria Campos Mello and Aydia Mayotte. Ellie Dougherty earned the first kill for GV and Mariana de Carvalho go into a groove on the attacking end. Brooklyn Roder found her attack later in the set, and combined with Campos Mello for a block, to maintain the lead. The Vikings went down 19-20 before Coach Cook called a timeout. The Vikings battled back and forth with Park for the remainder of the set, and three big kills from Dougherty proved to keep them in it. The Vikings finally took over the advantage at 27-26, and Carvalho delivered the final blow in set one, 28-26.

The second set also took extra time. Grand View had more attacks from Ellie Dougherty and Carvalho in this one, and Jocelyn Barrett found her swing in this set, delivering timely kills for the Vikings. Juliana Neves assisted in nearly every attack, setting the team up for success. GV again, was down late into the set, and called a timeout at 27-27. The Vikings took the lead 30-29 and finished the set off the same way. Carvalho kill from Neves put the Vikings up 2-0.

The third and fourth set didn't end the way Grand View wanted. In set three, Park extended the lead to 9-14 in the middle of the set, and the Vikings couldn't seem to cut that lead down, losing 19-25. The fourth set was a slow start for the Vikings. The Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Vikings never recovered in the set and lost 13-25.

The Vikings found a way to stop momentum in set five. The set was tied at 6 a piece after a Campos Mello kill and a block from Barrett and Neves at the net. A timeout from Park followed, and Park was up 8-7 when the teams switched sides. After another point from each side, the Vikings took over. Juliana Neves served the last six points for Grand View with Lindsey Hrbek, Campos Mello, and Carvalho earning key kills in the run. Hrbek also combined with Campos Mello for a block. Neves finished the set off with a service ace and the set ended 15-9. Grand View 3-2 final.
