OLATHE, KANSAS – The Vikings traveled to play MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday. These are two of the top three teams in the Heart of America to this point. Grand View suffered their first conference loss of the season against the Pioneers, bringing their record to 22-2 and 12-1 in conference play.
The first set was a rocky start for GV, calling a timeout at 1-8. The Vikings chipped away with kills from Mariana de Carvalho and Ellie Dougherty, making it 17-22 but couldn't get the lead. The first set was a 20-25 loss.
Grand View had the same result in set two. The set was much more even to start. Dougherty delivered the Vikings first kill, and Clarissa Hasty found a service ace to knot things up at 5. Carvalho kept on the attack, and Vitoria Campos Mello and Brooklyn Roder earned a block. Jocelyn Barrett added her first kill later in the set and the match was tied again at 15-15. Barrett found a couple kills in a row late in the set, but Grand View lost 5 straight which was too much to come back from.
The Vikings first two kills came from Lindsey Hrbek in the third set. Carvalho followed, and Barrett teamed up with Campos Mello for a block. This cut the early deficit back down to two. Dougherty finished a kill a little later and our setter Juliana Neves took one herself for a kill. After another Hrbek kill, the Vikings were down 10-11. The Pioneers went on a huge run after this, forcing two different timeouts by Grand View, and a 21-11 hole. This proved to be the nail biter as the Vikings ended the set 15-25.
