Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night with 3-1 Win over Mount Mercy

DES MOINES, IA– The Grand View women's volleyball team capped off an exciting night on their home court, celebrating Senior Night with a strong 3-1 victory over Mount Mercy University Mustangs. The match was a thrilling display of skill, teamwork, and dedication, culminating in a special moment for Vitoria Campos Mello.

The night began with high energy from both sides. Grand View took the first set convincingly, showcasing their offensive prowess with a .481 attack percentage, led by Mariana de Carvalho with 4 kills and Vitoria Campos Mello tallying 5 kills. The Vikings dominated at the net with three blocks and solid defense, earning a 25-14 win.

In the second set, Mount Mercy fought back, pushing the Vikings to their limits. The beginning of the set went back and forth with both teams fighting to take the lead. A little more than half way through the match the Mustangs took a 3 point lead making it 19-16. Despite a valiant effort late in the set from the Vikings, the Mustangs ended up taking the set 25-17. 

The third set was a standout moment for the Vikings, who rallied to a 25-22 victory. The team had 19 kills and a .366 attacking percentage. Helping pave the set were Juliana Neves with 16 assists, Ellie Dougherty and Vitoria Campos Mello with 7 kills a piece. Most notably, as the set drew to a close, Vitoria Campos Mello executed her 1,000th career kill, a milestone celebrated by teammates and fans alike. Campos Mello's remarkable achievement highlighted her dedication and impact on the program.

In the final set, Grand View came out strong, completing the match with a solid 25-18 victory. The Vikings showcased their resilience and teamwork, capitalizing on Mount Mercy's errors and executing key plays when needed. Brooklyn Roder and Ellie Dougherty opened the scoring with a big block, and the team maintained their momentum throughout the set. Jocelyn Barrett heavily contributed to the team's offensive success with 6 kills during the match. Vikings win the match 3-1.

This match was also a special Senior Night celebration, honoring the contributions of the team's seniors who have dedicated years to the program. Their leadership and perseverance set a tone for future success. The Vikings look to build on this momentum for their match against Clarke University today at 2:00 PM.
