CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Women's Soccer traveled east tonight, looking to bounce back from their conference opener on Saturday. The Vikings battled Mount Mercy, and it proved to be an equal contest. A 1-1 score as the clock hit zero tonight, but not for a lack of entertainment and excitement.
The Vikings entered the contest looking to tally their first conference win of the season. The Mustangs' offense controlled the field for most of the first half, and Briella Bastian found a goal in the 16th minute of play due to a penalty kick. The Vikings showed heart and resilience moving forward, led by great defense and a couple of important saves from Maya Fritz. They went into the half, only trailing 0-1 and still well within reach.
In the 2nd half of action, the Vikings kept them off the scoreboard despite 11 more shots for the home team. Grand View came out more physical in the second half, recording four fouls to their zero in the first half. Fighting through the Mustang's attacking offensive style, the Vikings started to gain momentum in their own offense during the second 45:00. Though more attacks were showing for the Vikings, nothing found the back on the net until late. Ella Forsyth accounted for the equalizer in the 87th minute, tying the game at one apiece. The battle in Cedar Rapids ends on that note, and despite the Vikings coming short of their first conference win, they showed a lot of fight and have good notes to be taken from the contest.
